    Where did you get HSBC from as the OP quite clearly stated that it was a Halifax Branch!!

    I use the Halifax instant pay-in machines from time to time - these count the money automatically in front of you, then you confirm that the amount is correct before committing the deposit. The money is then instantly available in your account. However, I think they only work if you have a debit card for the account you're paying into.

    As others have said, a bank transfer is the logical solution to this. Any reason you're not doing it this way? The LL can't be trying to hide it from the tax man as it's still going through his bank account.
