Travel Novice - changing money and using debit card on Crete

Very un-travelled person here with couple of basic questions,

Going to Crete on honeymoon, we're staying in a friend's holiday home which is a bit out of the way and money exchanges may not be abundant or close by.

Went to a resort in Turkey a couple of years ago and was advised that it was cheaper to change money there rather than at home (which turned out to be true) so changed a bit up before we went and the bulk of it in Turkey as we needed it.

Does anyone know if this is also likely to be the case with Crete?

Also, went to Turkey with the whole family (10 of us!), only a week all inclusive, so security wasn't much of a problem as we only took £200 spending money btween us and had plenty of backup/people to help us out if we lost it or anything went wrong.

This time though, we'll be on our own and are self catering so will be taking a lot more (especially as it's our honeymoon) Family have advised that we may want up to £1000 between us. So security is a big issue.

Anyone know if we will be able to use our ordinary RBS Visa debit cards there to withdraw cash so that we don't have to carry/securely store so large an amount and how much fees are likely to be?

Any other advice on what might be the best way of arranging our money while we are away?

(Going in 4 days so no time to apply for credit or other cards and unlikely to qualify anyway...)

If there are ATMs in your resort card is most likely the way to go. But the right card.
  • Hmm,
    Thanks PeacefulWaters,
We both have an RBS Debit card and that's it - no other cards of any type and no time to apply. Also, we're not in a resort - it's a friend's house, halfway up a fairly isolated mountain near a village of just 100 people in the ruralish south east of Crete - not sure how numerous either ATMs or Bureaux de Changes will be.

So it looks as though we are going to have to go with cash, changed into euros at the best rate we can find before we go and just be really security conscious - split it up between us and into different bits, don't carry too much when out and about, use any safe facilities there might be etc.

If anyone's got any security tips for us, they'd be welcome.....

  • order cash for picking up at the airport will be your best bet, do not just get it from the airport order it first and make sure you get buy back and then any you don't use will be bought back at the rate you bought it at.
