I will give this a go first. Unfortunately I no longer have the Microsoft discs for Excel and Word (I assume the ex took those!) so would have to buy them again if did a factory restore I assume?

How do I do a factory restore?
How do I upgrade it to W7?

Many thanks for all the replies.

No, if you can borrow the install disks from somewhere else, all you need is the licence key which is already in the laptop from the current install.
Or install Libre Office, which does the same job and costs you nothing.
Dell factory restore is very simple and explained in the laptop's manual-which again you can obtain online via the service tag.
    W7 upgrade-ebay?
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

No, the service tag is a 7 digit alphanumeric.

    It's ok. I have it.
  • Dare I say it, but forget Windows 7 - go for Windows 8.1 for a much more responsive laptop. If you want the Start menu, install StartIsBack for less than a couple of quid, last time I looked and worked out the conversion.

No need....and certainly not worth it if there is an issue with the hardware.
