Is this part of school or college, if college does she have a UNIDAY's card. If so, could go for £500 laptop with i5 processor from Curry's and get it for £400. Or £400 laptop for £320.
Mansion TV. Avoid at all cost's :j

how about a second hand one for £190-ish, and when she starts uni in a year or two, she probably want an apple anyway

To be honest, id you open the old one up, suck out the dust, that should stop it from over heating and flaking out and cost £0

    Thanks All

It is an Inspiron 1545 running Windows Vista. 3GB Ram. 32-bit operating system.

Last year I bought another battery for it as it had to be on charge constantly. That cost about £40 - is it worth spending more on it?

I have no idea how to clean the fan.

That spec is perfectly adequate for the tasks outlined, unless she's going to be doing high-end Photoshop work. Ask her what software she'll be using. Plenty of YouTube guides on cleaning the fan ducting, it's a common issue on that model, especially if she's been using it on a soft surface (duvet etc). If you must, take it to an independent repair shop, it's a twenty minute job.

Then do a factory restore and it will be a as good as new.
You might also upgrade it to W7.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
  • there is a service tag written on the underside of the laptop. What is it?

I will give this a go first. Unfortunately I no longer have the Microsoft discs for Excel and Word (I assume the ex took those!) so would have to buy them again if did a factory restore I assume?

How do I do a factory restore?
How do I upgrade it to W7?

Many thanks for all the replies.

Why? I've managed to do a degree course and I've never wanted or needed an apple.

Big Grarme, it's heard mentality. Other kids use apple, so one must have an apple. My friends two daughters at uni now use Apples, and apparently do most of the class. Friends wife bought an Apple for her masters at uni, then bought a really meaty windows laptop for 3d work to. And if the discount is right, why not

Not sure UK uni's are as bad as below yet though

No, the service tag is a 7 digit alphanumeric.
