TV is not always bundled with Broadband, you can have phone/TV/broadband in whatever combo you wish. The only requirement for broadband is that you need an active line to receive it, unless you use VM cable. But you really don't need subscription TV, based on info you have given.
Forget TV rental, they're available very cheaply in supermarkets if you only want a small screen model. TV rental largely vanished in the UK 20 years ago.

    If you need:

CNN, CNBC, Bloomberg and something called ARISE News

then satellite is the way to go. The signals are FREE, but you need the dish outside, and a DVB-S/FreeSat receiver.

This is a cheap solution for terrestrial TV on your laptop.

It's just too much hassle to set up household for nine months.

    1. Find a sugar daddy.

    2. Move in with one of the lecturers. He will only lose his tenure if he teaches you and can affect your grades. So, if you are in Social Studies, date a Economics lecturer. If they are too boring, find your way to Media Studies.

    3. House share, where they already have a TV.
  • Hi friends,

Thanks for the replies. Pincher...I cannot move unfortunately :(:) lol.

For the broadband plan, will I need to get my own wireless router, or will the service provider give me a wireless router and set it up?

    Thanks,
    Cassie

Most providers give you a wireless router for 'free', maybe just for the postage cost-but if not there are thousands on eBay from a fiver.
I think you are maybe trying to plan too far ahead. Without knowing if there is already a working line into the property, you can't do much more before you take up residence.
If you already have your accom fixed, ask the LL or EA what the existing facilities are for phone and TV.
And don't forget gas, electricity, water, council tax, contents insurance etc...

If you don't want to watch a lot of tv, you could have broadband and line, then watch tv via BBC iPlayer, ITV player, 4oD and Demand 5 websites on your laptop. This will give free access to at least 7 channels, but not all content of the live programmes.

The above will not require a licence to view, unless you choose to watch programmes live; ie as they are transmitted.
