Mazda Transponder Key

Hi all,

I'm hoping somebody could help me or shed some light on a little problem..

I went to go out in my car (Mazda 2, TS2 59 Plate) last Saturday and the remote central locking fob didn't unlock the car and I had to open the car the old fashioned way. I replaced the battery thinking that was all it was but it still doesn't work but the light on the remote does flash and the key still starts the engine.

I have contacted the main dealer but they want £85+vat just to look at it, and reprogram it if that's what the problem is. I've tried following the guides online to reprogramme it myself but it doesn't seem to work.

Does anybody have any tips or insight they can offer before I shell out £102 for the garage to try and sort?

Thank you in advance

  • It's very likely that the fob is cream crackered. Is it a separate fob or does it have the key built in?

It has the key built in. This was a new fob that we only bought in April of last year costing £250, I really hope that's not what it is :(

The remote part and the immobiliser chip are 2 separate items.

If the battery went the fob may have lost its connection with the car. You can usually program that back yourself with a ignition sequence.

    Check the handbook.

Yes, it was from a Mazda dealer. I've checked the receipt and there's nothing on there about a warranty so I wasn't really sure if I could go back to them after 18 months? But you would expect it to last longer than that I would have thought.

It's true they are two seperate items, which is why the key still works but the code for the fob is stored in the ECU, even after the battery is replaced the fob will transmit the same code if it is working properly.

The problem is likely to be the receiver in the car or, more likely, the fob itself.

I'd try the dealer, afaik they warrant parts for 2 years so it's worth a go but, if it turns out to be the receiver then Mazda are a very expensive way of getting it repaired when you can pick up a second hand part on ebay for under £50 usually.

Thank you but all it says in the handbook is 'contact the local Mazda dealer', I have tried the sequences posted online and they don't seem to work.
