Many thanks to all who posted to my last question.
Now I have another one, that has just come up today.
I have been looking around for car insurance for my 17 year old son. The price diffencnce is .... well amazing.
Can anyone explain the following:
1.2 Nova - in his name - cheapest quote £1200 TPFT
1.8 Alfa - in my name, with him as named driver - cheapest quote £500 - Comp.
Worst quote was £2600 for the Nova - brought for £36 - !!!!
So how can it cost more for me to insure him to drive an Alfa than an Nova?
Regards,
Steve.
PS. Best quote is Norich Union

Yes I think that may be the only option.
But it just baffles me how there be so much variation in the prices quoted!0 -
in responce to al mac
even if you insure the car in your name and put your son on as a named driver, you would need to disclose that he would be the main driver of the vehicle, therefore the price of the policy would be based on him.
If you dont tell the insurance company that he would be the main driver, then this woul dbe classed as you "fronting" the policy for your son, and the insurance company could cancel your policy and not pay out for any claims. Also if they canceled the policy for the reason of "fronting", you would then have to disclose this reason to other insurance companies, and they could refuse to insure you.0 -

You right about 'fronting' the policy.
My son will not be the main driver so I wouldn't have that problem.
Norwich Union told me this morning that the price is correct - relativly cheap because the Alfa is a 1995 car. Would be a lot more on a 2005 model! Even offered me a good deal and extra discount if I insured my other (classic car) with them - must be desperate for the business!0 -
Just to reiterate the "fronting" point. This is a big issue in the private motor market at the moment and insurers are starting to get hot on it!!
You would probably only find problems in the event of a claim, so you would be left holding the baby so to speak. If you give misleading information at the start of the policy and this is material to the insurer taking on the risk, you are guilty of misrepresentation. This can result in voiding of the policy from inception and any claims being invalid.
