  • Bah my Zoopla only goes as low as telling me what the price was three months ago not one month and the difference from then is only a paltry £2342 -I knew I should have bought a mansion when I won that £10'000'000 on the lottery rather than all those boxes of Tic-Tacs

My stock and property based pension fund increased in value last month, but as I didn't cash it in, it doesn't matter
That Taylor Wimpey share I had a punt on soared, but it doesn't matter, because I didn't sell.
My Kruger Rands tanked, but it doesn't matter because I didn't sell them
Don't blame me, I voted Remain.

    I've been Money Tipped!
It cost us : the mortgage, the slowest landscaper in the world, the plumber's visit, the roofer's visit ( but thank god a roofer visited at last). And about sixty hours labour from my husband ( bit of a slacking month)

My house currently saves me about £300 every month because I bought it instead of renting it. Recent price increases mean I've been able to pay off the mortgage on my holiday home by transferring the debt to my main mortgage at a favourable LTV banding and rate. Decided to keep the payment the same which knocks 2 years off the term so another saving there and brings the final redemption date to just a few years before state retirement age.

I'll have been mortgaged for about 40 years by the time my mortgages disappear and this slow reduction in capital owed has provided a wonderful opportunity to increase pension payments and take advantage of a 40% tax relief.

If we’re talking about investments then you can’t not mention "yield", which is almost certainly negative, as others have pointed out. While your capital may have increased you still hold a volatile and relatively illiquid asset.

Whereas if you had bought a home to live in. . . none of these things would really matter.

Asking prices in August are now yesterday's news remember?

Halifax have said today that sold prices increased in August though. Highest since 2008 and about £9k above your April peak.
