Identity Theft & CC Issued

  • The well to do confidence trickster is certainly one profile of fraudster I'm familiar with.

Are you able to explain how the card is at the address in question yet has been used for a withdrawal?
I know where you're coming from PW, but seriously, no way. they have no need for 100 quid. But equally, no, I have no idea how anyone got enough information about me to target my identity.

As I say (again), the credit card sent a letter following the application, asking for more evidence of ID - then went ahead and issued the card anyway. If they can't even follow their own protocols, then little wonder that fraudsters are able to penetrate their safeguards.

    Hi All

I recently returned home on annual visit, and collected a pile of post from my home rented out to very good tenants of 5 years.

and I have for many years, gone to great lengths to keep my identity safe. I shred all post before binning.

These two statements seem to contradict each other.

Maybe, by being con artists, is how your tenants can have a Bentley each? (I've watched Hustle :rotfl:)

It's not my bank, it's not my card - it's nothing to do with me.

I'm beginning to get the feeling that most of the people commenting here aren't experts at all :(

If you want an expert, pay £200/hour for a solicitor. I'm here giving advice in my spare time, based on my experience, what I know about legislation/industry practice and common sense.

Legally speaking, it is your card and is everything to do with you. If I were you, I'd ensure that the complaint is logged in writing, sent by recorded delivery and preferably showing entry/exit stamps on your passport or other proof that you were not in the UK at the time the agreement was taken out.

What does the T's having Bentleys have anything to do with anything? Just looked on Autotrader, the cheapest is about £4k, and I know that the Continental GT's can be picked up now for less than the price of a new 3-series.

  • Who said we were experts?

Incidentally I work in fraud but don't let that get in the way of your judgement.

    I'll PM you.
Fair enough G&B, I was just reacting to what seems to be a lot of people commenting who either haven't taken the time to read the full posting first, or who are just looking for ways to inject conjecture and shed doubt on the credibility of my story.

But thank you for your follow-up PM :)

not at all, every time I discard post or anything with my ID on it, it gets shredded. as for all the suggestions that my tenants are somehow in on it - please, if you understood the reality (as opposed to watching too much reality TV), you would discount this as sincerely as I have.

And just as a refresher - the question I posed was not "who did it", my question was about the relative severity of the bank's negligence, and what would be a reasonable demand for compensation.

I sincerely doubt that, and anyway
*as my original post clearly states*
the credit card has already confirmed that it was a case of identity theft and that I did not apply for it.

As for Bentleys, I'd love to see you pick up one of these for 4k

He works on oil rigs. They have 2. They've just renewed the lease for another year. Please Clouseau, let's drop this idea

Sorry but collecting a pile of post once a year is in no way "going to great lengths to protect your identity", hence your problems now.

Oh and by the way, Hustle isn't reality TV, but a light hearted drama about a group of high end con artists, which I know is fiction and probably not very true to real life, hence the :rotfl: smiley.

That would only be true if my tenants either rotated regularly, or if the property security was otherwise compromised.

As it is, the property is very secure, the dear wife collects all my post, pops it into handy manilla envelopes, and stashes it away in the spotless house until I visit.

I really have no idea why everyone keeps banging on about this idea but this thread is starting to become a bore.

£25 plus confirmation that the account has been closed and any trace of it with CRAs has been removed.

You still haven't suggested how the card had been used and turned up at this address.

I can only assume they registered a correspondence address after approval, and had a replacement mailed there.
