Has anyone put down slate chippings and will it deter or attract cats?

I have slate chippings on my front patch. The cats have not been near it for 10 years. Till a new cat moved in down the road who has clearly not understood that cats aren't meant to like going on them. I was a bit naughty and let my bull terrier get rather closer than I would normally allow when I caught it mid crap. (No cat was harmed in the making of this post!) I also sprinkled garlic water all over the slate. It's not been back since, not sure which of the two deterrents was more effective. Slate chippings are far more of a deterrent than lawn or bare earth. Whatever you do, don't use bark mulch - that's like an open invitation to a house party.

Edit - I used twigs rather than cocktail sticks - far less effort and much quicker.
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

Wrong, I have a large garden and enjoy it, as do my children and any free roaming animals that come and go as they please. S##t is part of life, setting up carpet grippers against cats is inhumane, bordering on sadistic.

I don't think so somehow. Cats tend to like me, and I would think they would be sensing any anti-cat vibes coming from me. Only yesterday this strange cat kept on coming back again and again to me for more attention (eg another stroke). Nowt against cats...just don't want them ruining my garden and I have enough respect for their intelligence that I think it wouldn't take them long at all to realise "This human is saying 'not in my back yard' to me and I'd better take myself off somewhere else to do my business and we can both live happily ever after".

Post the doings back to your neighbour. Put a small tray of food down with a couple of cheap biscuits in every now and then.

We did that and no more poop in our garden....

Id put your windows through and set about you if you were my neighbour.
Thats said im told lion poo works but is it not replacing cat poo with really big cat poo? A humane method of deterent would be the garden hose.

I have slate chippings with fir cones dotted around, it's stopped next door's cats from pooing on my garden

  • I had the same problem a couple of years ago, I tried every sort of chemical repellant, nothing worked and every time it rained I had to re-apply. I ended up purchasing a couple of these devices http://www.amazon.co.uk/PestBye-Battery-Operated-Cat-Repeller/dp/B004SGC75S/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1409982967&sr=8-1&keywords=cat+repellent+ultrasonic . I had to buy 2 as after I installed one device the furry beast found another spot to use as a toilet on the other side of the garden outside the range, it took a couple of days to take effect but since then my garden has been poo free.

    Bet

    ^^^^This!

After years of cat fouling in my small back yard, I bought one of these a few months ago and put it in the corner of the yard in a plant. No cat foul since. I also bought some repellent sticks that smell of citronella and stuck them in other plants around the yard. I have a million cats in my street but the above methods have finally worked! :T

Sorry I'm being a bit dense, I don't understand the bit about cheap biscuits :o

  • those that say that cat owners shouldn't allow their cats to crap in other peoples gardens I am facinated as to how you would stop them

Keep them in 24/7 - that is cruel. A dog owner would be had up by the rspca if they did that to a dog so why would it be acceptable for a cat?

Follow them and pick up their droppings - would love to see you scale a fence and climb trees probably wearing night vision goggles with a poopa scooper in hand at 3 in the morning.

Keep them in 24/7 and take them out for a walk on a lead to do their business? - have you ever tried to take a cat for a walk on a lead? I have when I moved to my first house 10 years ago and got my first kitten and wanted him to experience outside without him running off - it really doesn't work.

    Any other ideas?

Re cats on a lead, actually have you read either of the "A Cat Named Bob" books? About a homeless man who got adopted by a cat called Bob and they seem to be huge pals with each other. The cat chose him and he's quite clear on that fact and he takes that cat to places on a lead sometimes (ie for the cats sake).

He credits Bob with huge levels of intelligence and emotional savvy, with various references to how Bob sussed out a dicey person before he did and would deal with appropriately.

    They're a good read actually.
  • His cat was more intelligent than mine then. I ended up trying to drag mine around the block with him ending up on his back at one point. never tried it again
