Thing is, though, ready grated cheese will spoil more quickly than block, due to a much higher surface area for the buggies to go at ;)

Ahaaa ;) (that's 'ahaa' as in 'now I understand' and not as in Abba Knowing Me Knowing You ahaa':D :p;) ).

I know the ready grated stuff can be cheaper but its all full of potato starch and stuff :(
I buy decent cheese (usually have cheddar, parmesan, brie and possibly feta) and keep it my tefal cheese preserver in the fridge. keeps for a month (more for parmesan, less for softs) yum yum
I miss my strong irish cheeses (gubbeen-drool) that are impossible to get in essex, but I love cheddars and west country brie (or proper brie de meaux-again, drool!!)

    Yummmmmmmy, brie, drooling too!
  • grated cheese in a sealed tub, preferably in a food bag, which you can make smaller as you use it (to keep air out) will last about a week.
if you have too much freeze the rest, will cook from frozen if grated for most things.

Most of the ready grated cheeses are hard cheese like cheddar. Hard cheese doesn't have enough water in it and has too much salt in it for bacteria to grow. At worst, it will dry out but you are highly unlikely to get food poisoning from hard cheese.

You could always use it in a cheese sauce? even when it is dried out.

Surely cheese goes mouldy when it goes off. My mum used to cut that off and use the rest. I`m still here and I do the same!

Mould and bacteria are not the same.

Mould grows in much drier conditions than bacteria do and that's why things like bread and cheese go mouldy.

I agree with beaney50 - cut off the mould and use the rest. The dog will eat the mouldy stuff and I'll use the rest to make macaroni cheese :)

I've read several times on here that ready grated cheese is cheaper than block (for the same stuff). Never checked myself, anyone want to compare prices and let us know

Just checked on Asda website for all you none believers, it's exactly the same price for Asda own (but not smartprice) 250g grated medium cheddar as is is for a 250g block of medium cheddar - £1.84.
I couldn't compare smartprice cheese because it doesn't come in a specific sized block, they will have slightly different prices for slightly different sizes.
You can get 500g of grated "pizza cheese" for only £1.98 though, which I bet would freeze well for doing pizzas.

I miss asda so much, sniff sniff...
  • I'll add this to the existing thread on storing cheese ;)

I got a liitle carried away at my local Asda when I saw Xmas stock of Extra strong cheddar reduced to £2 for a large block. I bought 3, and I live alone...and am trying to lose weight so not eat TOO much cheese. Hmm
What is the best way to store this to make it last? Am I right that cheese cannot be frozen because of the high fat content?
Should I take it out of the plastic wrapping or leave it in.
I know that a liitle bit of mould does not mean it has to be binned, but would like to keep it as fresh as possible.
    Thanks.
