What resolution were you playing the videos in? Something with a celeron may well struggle to actually pump out HD videos due to being totally weedy.

Also, what browser were you running? Was all your software up to date?

Try playing a video at anything from 144p to 480p and see how it performs.

You can take it back though, because they have that 90 day satisfaction thing so you can take it back and get something else... I'd say something with an I3. You'll be paying more, but really celeron processors are so underpowered it's not even worth bothering with them.

They do have a 90 day returns policy but this is for unwanted goods that have not been used. It's not a 90 day period in which you can use and test items and then return if unsuitable.

The 90 days is only a guideline, not a firm limit, and they are perfectly happy to refund on products that have tried, and decided that you don't like.

This is John Lewis, not Currys.

    It's advertised with:

    "Optimized productivity
Finally, a laptop that can keep up with you. And the Precision touchpad is designed specifically to improve accuracy and speed.
    Sensational fun
Whether you're playing a game, recording a song or streaming a movie, the high-definition LED display and graphics capabilities enhance every multimedia experience."

So there should be no problem playing youtube videos. But you need to establish it's the laptop and not your internet. Is it better when you plug in directly to the router rather than wireless (disable your wireless when testing this). Don't run anything like Skype while you are testing.

Do you have access to another laptop you can try at home to stream the same videos this one is struggling with?

Once you have proved it's this laptop, then you may have grounds to return it. As others have said, make sure it's up to date with windows - if it's downloading windows update (or dropbox files) in background that will slow it down.

They may be willing to do so in some instances, but their refund policy does give them the right to refuse a refund on returned goods that have been used.
    Refund policy.
    Terms & conditions.

It's important that any unwanted item, unless faulty, is returned in a re-saleable condition. We'd expect this to mean that you've kept all original packaging and labels, and that it's undamaged and unused

It's a Celery processor, so you're right that it's bottom-rung - I suspect the above comments probably cover it between them. I have a juicy new i5 processor laptop, and it took a while for all the updates to apply and takes a bit of breathing time after a reboot before videos play beautifully thanks to having a low-speed (low energy/longer battery life) hard drive to buffer against. If there's any network contention then you're also likely to be caching to a slow drive which may cause stuttering. And doubtless there are various preinstalled antivirus products grinding away!

Try leaving the machine on for 20 mins then playing plugged into the charger, through a network cable into the router during off-peak hours - I suspect it'll settle down and work.

Have you ever been in a John Lewis?

There is no point in quoting their T&Cs as they are not like Currys who will do anything to fob you off.

They want you to be happy, so you will come back and spend lots more money.

They will refund the OP if that is what they want.

Have you read about the JL service on here much? A lot of people complain that they don't go above and beyond as far as the customer wants, which is because perception has gotten too similar to yours.

The only way to know is to ask JL. They may or may not accept the return, but there is also no use in telling the OP they certainly will, as he has no solid ground to ask for that.

Most of the regular posters here will refer to T&Cs and SoGA as a base line, and anything above that is goodwill that cannot be counted on.

I've been to JL many times and have also praised their aftersales service on here many times:

John Lewis for example give a minimum of a 2 year guarantee on all of their computers, and whilst they may be slightly more costly than Amazon, you have the benifit of being able to browse in the shop and if you have any problems, their aftersales service is normally very good.

If you decide to go for the laptop recommended by GlasgowTech, I would suggest getting it from John Lewis rather than Tesco.

John Lewis are normally very good with returns and I've taken stuff back to a store 3 or 4 weeks after purchase and never had a problem.

Saying that, this forum is entitled "Consumer rights", so I see nothing whatsoever wrong with informing an OP if the retailer in question has the legal right to refuse to accept a change of mind return even if the possibility of this return being refused is fairly remote.
JL do have very good customer service, but do a search on here and you will still find the odd occasion where the quality of that service has fallen below what normally happens.

    They won't do 'anything'

And the number of idiots trying it on has certainly adjusted their view on what they will do for a consumer.

Your view isn't inline with recent experiences, or threads on here about JL.
