Did you owe any money to the Natwest or any banks that are in the same group?

Ahhh... I had an RBS account which I closed in 2006 when I left RBS group when I worked for them... It was open for 3 months because they made it contractual to have wages paid into one of their accounts!
I like to think I can help but its for discussion purposes only so if I get it wrong please feel free to correct me.

Did you default on a Natwest account of any description all those years ago?

Never owed them any money in the past 1st time I have had approached them since I closed my RBS account in 2006 after I stopped working for them!

  • Egg and Lloyds I owed the money to any of them part of the RBS group now other than Lloyds part owned by the tax payer like RBS?

I'm surprised you got a job with a bank in 2006 if you had a default in 2005.

Banks do get a monthly update from the CRAs for current account holders which may be why they know about your previous adverse information when it no longer shows but I'd be surprised if they declined a current account on this basis. I could understand them keeping a "bad customer" file for people that have defaulted on agreements with THEM but using monthly feed data from 8 years ago when you were OK with them seems a bit much.

Open a sole account (will prob wait a few months so dont have multiple applications) and then add my wife onto the account?
A small number of applications in a short space of time should not be anything to worry about. Opening a sole account is really to test the water - if that application is not successful, then clearly something is wrong with your credit files.

No, but avoiding Lloyds banking group will certainly narrow your options and Egg credit cards eventually got sold on to Barclaycard - whether that is relevant I don't know.

Would they even be permitted to do so?

No, they are not connected and they wouldn't be connected by the Government either, the Government is just a shareholder. I could only imagine the complete mockery of the DPA that allowing shareholders access to personal information and then sharing it with other companies they also have shares in would be.

No, I was referring to retaining old data from a feed from the CRAs.

They would need to be able to justify it to the ICO. They may not be keeping the entire feed, just a marker/note to say "Bad customer."

I think it's a stretch in these circumstances (justifying a marker like that being retained for 8 years given the OP didn't breach an agreement with them.)

Normally I'd imagine the OP did something during his employment to get them to the point of wanting no further dealings with them.
