Maybe not your place to do so but from a friendship stand point could you not pay the £50 to your friend and stop all this animosity? Sure it may not be what you want to do and why should you but seen as it is very little money would it be not better for stress levels and friendship just for you to step in and pay?

My mother (who has used the printer for the past 12 years for her charity) has already stepped in and offered to pay so that he will not be out of pocket. I am more concerned with his mental health (he is a little fragile) and the fact that he is being bullied by my ex-boss.

I have no doubt that her business will not do well purely because of her attitude, but at the same time it is a shame as her partner is lovely and doesn't deserve to fail because of this.
  • So it turns out my mother has been emailing my ex-boss and expressing her disappointment that the matter has not been resolved and offering to pay the printer if my ex-boss won't....cue a number of ascerbic emails from ex-boss saying that she is feeling "stressed" (because she won't pay a printer £50 he's due?!) and that she is getting solicitors involved to act as "mediators".

Rightly or wrongly I have sent a polite email to her partner saying I think things are getting a little out of hand and could he please look into resolving this matter to avoid further stress for all concerned. He's always been much more reasonable than she has (if a little hen-pecked) so we'll see what happens.
  • these are not business people,if they are not happy with the cards they should just reject them and return them to the printer, anybody who has been in business knows things like this are going to crop up all the time and wasting time and energy on such a small amount is pointless.Sounds like they are just trying to behave like "business people" would,if you feel the need to rectify things pop down to staples and they will knock out 500 cards for about a fiver, you can charge them £50 and pay your printer friend.

Stop wasting energy on this matter. If you really want to put a stop to everything pay the printer yourself. He's then not out of pocket. He can politely email your ex-boss and say sorry they are not happy with the business cards and as a gesture of goodwill he is writing off payment.

Everyone can then move on and let your old employers take the fast lane to a failing business.
