NPOWER closed my account

At the beginning of Aug 2014, NPOWER sent me a "we're sorry you're leaving" letter. I promptly rang them up to say I had not initiated any energy supplier switches which they agreed toy saying that they had closed my account by mistake. I asked then to re-instate my account which they also agreed to promising to telephone me as soon as my account was active. I have now just received another letter saying that my account is now closed and due to problems "with their system" are not able to send me a correct final bill. In fact "any outstanding balance related to my final billing period with npower, has been written off".

Since I have not received a bill from NPOWER since Mar 2013 is this the best money saving deal ever or is something going to bite me?

Who now is supplying my electricity (I have not been cut off)? Will I continue to be supplied indefinitely with no supplier?

Have you paid for any energy since March 2013? This reply assumes you have not.

Have you evidence of telling npower you have not received a bill since March 2013? If so then, provided you have not contributed to the bill being delayed, I don't think they can bill you for any energy used more than a year ago. (Although I am not certain on this point.) In which case the longer they take to sort things out the better for you, as you will only need to pay for the last 12 months of energy from when they do send a bill.

See the back billing code for details:

    http://www.energy-uk.org.uk/publication/finish/43-code-of-practice-for-accurate-bills/412-the-code-of-practice-for-accurate-bills-back-billing-for-domestic-customers.html

My understanding is you still have a contract with npower so they should be supplying your energy. I cannot imagine your supply will be cut off without lots of warning. Simply be prepared to set the record straight if another supplier contacts you.

In the meantime I would send npower a complaint in writing (so you have a copy as evidence) telling them of their further error. This should remove the risk that you may be regarded as having contributed to any further delay in a bill being issued. They probably won't act on your complaint anyway.
  • Hi naedanger, thank you for your reply.
The whole tone of the letter from Npower is that as far as they are concerned the account is closed. Any outstanding money owed on bills would be treated favorably. There is no outstanding bill since they have not sent any and I am fully paid up on previous bills.

I am more concerned about trying to get a new supplier, particularly as I have a 10 hour electricity meter system and also since there is no agreed final reading with Npower.

Complain to npower in writing that you do not want your account to be closed and never asked for it to be closed.

    Hi markc5442

    Thanks for your post.

It sounds like either we've closed the account in error, or your supply has been taken over by another company without your consent. Either way, if you send an email marked for my attention to the address on our profile along with your account/address details, I'll investigate this and make sure your account is set up correctly and you get an up to date bill for your usage, complete with any reductions if you are eligible for them.

    Regards

    Jess :)

Don't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.
