Do you really need Fibre Optic

For casual daily internet use and for online gaming through a Sony PS4, is fibre optic really a necessity?

No - millions do those things without it.0

It's a trick question,
One application is light use,
the other one is multi-user action heavy duty stuff.0 -
Depends what ADSL speed you get. If you only have 0.5Mb/s with ADSL, the extra from FTTC could make all the difference.tizzle6560 wrote: »For casual daily internet use and for online gaming through a Sony PS4, is fibre optic really a necessity? Are you for real? - Glass Half Empty??

Virgin fibre optic is apparently the only one available to me at the moment although had bad experience with them a few years back. The cabinet on my street has not been upgraded yet for Bt lines.
I can also get Sky friends & family discount so is it worth just getting Sky adsl?0 -
What sort of speed estimate are they giving? You just need to go through the first stages of ordering with most providers to see that. If it's 5Mbps or so I doubt you'd see much difference with something faster.
Where you would notice is if you download big game updates or use Steam or any other big downloads - that's where speed matters. VM cable has higher jitter than ADSL which some gamers moan about. I'm not a gamer so can't really comment - just pass on what I've seen reported.0 -
Fair question this.
I'm as far from the exchange as possible and not in a cable area. My ADSL gave speeds of approx between 1-2.5 mb/s initially with supanet (enough said) and laterly with Sky where speed was slightly better. However, the main issue was reliability and think this was why Sky gave us initially a great deal on fibre unlimited. All set up costs and hub were met and we got it for £10 for first 6 months and remaining 6 it went up to standard £20. We're not too device heavy with a couple of laptops and daughters ipod and the 20 mb/s we get now seems sufficient and just as importantly is far more reliable. Like i said i felt compelled to change and try it because of poor service on ADSL.
However, having now cancelled TV with Sky and placed an order for an infinity bundle with BT i see most of the best offers are for ADLS with line rental. I still have about a week to change my mind as the full service starts with BT on 15th. Not seen too many fibre offers out there that can get close to BT's bundle package with cashback/vouchers at the moment.:(0
