TSB: You recently made a debit card transaction in Tesco. Can you confirm the amount
Me: I don't have the exact amount to hand, but I know it was about £40
TSB: Sorry, but I need to have an exact amount to put in. I can't see the answer in front of me which is why I have to key it in.
Me: But I don't remember the exact amount, I'm calling from my mobile and the receipt is at home.
TSB: Sorry, but I need an exact amount to key in.
I wonder if you'd said, simply, "£40" whether the system would have allowed it? I'd like to think it would have some margin built in. However, looks like we'll never know.

Did you offer some other transaction values that you could remember?

But to be honest whenever I've 'stumbled' on an answer I've always been offered another question instead.
  • The other question was could I confirm the exact amount of my salary credit which again I couldn't do as I don't receive a fixed amount each month.

Well that one would have caught me out too, because although I'm salaried I've noticed the net payment can vary by 20p or so each month (presumably due to tax 'tweaks'?).

But like I said, it would be very unfair if I was 20p out and so couldn't pass security.

I agree with the OP here.

My parents bank with Bank of Scotland and though they're computer literate and not that old, they bank like they're in the 20th century - all cheques and paper records. I convinced my dad to sign up to online banking, saying it would be easy to set up. He had to phone the bank, who proceeded to ask about specific transactions as you describe. It being a joint account, they were asking about transactions he personally hadn't even made, while he's flapping about getting my mum to dig out her supermarket receipts. If a vague "about £xx" would've done, that certainly wasn't made clear.

    Wrong .

Anyway for those of you who claim that I wouldn't have been asked for the exact amount, well the call went like this:

TSB: You recently made a debit card transaction in Tesco. Can you confirm the amount
Me: I don't have the exact amount to hand, but I know it was about £40
TSB: Sorry, but I need to have an exact amount to put in. I can't see the answer in front of me which is why I have to key it in.
Me: But I don't remember the exact amount, I'm calling from my mobile and the receipt is at home.
TSB: Sorry, but I need an exact amount to key in.

The advisor should have used the word "specific", not "exact."

"About £40" is not a specific answer. "£40" is a specific answer.

    Wrong .

So a slightly longer argument to contradict me would've been helpful.

For clarity what happened was my mum made a transaction on her debit card to the joint account, and my dad was asked about it for security. Are you saying this is impossible?

Sounds as if everything is always somebody elses responsibility or fault in your world.
