Err, as the person who made the call I was asked to confirm the exact amount, and resent any suggestion to the contrary.
Because I couldn't give precise answers to the contrary they refused to deal with me.
Of course security needs to be there but reasonable questions please!
Should have known that I couldn't expect nothing but sarcastic answers on MSE these days.

How do we know 'you are the person who made the call'?
Post #4 was made from a different logon ID than post #1.
If you are the same person then you've broken forum rules by having multiple accounts I believe.
The questions that get the best answers are the questions that give most detail....

Yes, Frontera2 (capital F) and frontera2 (small f) are different logons. No wonder you have trouble with your bank's security if you don't even know who you are.

It is not unusual for banks to ask you some very detailed questions, such as amounts of one or more most recent transactions, if you are not registered for telephone banking.

Ranting on an internet forum if you are not registered for telephone banking doesn't help you. Registering for telephone banking will help you next time you need it, if you remember how to use it.

Many organisations now impose "security" when there's absolutely no need to do so.

If a company has your personal information on record they have a legal obligation to not disclose this to anyone. The most efficient way to do things is check the identity of the pone caller.

    Missing the point.

Take the washing machine service contract as an example. The only "personal details" they have is name, address, and maybe telephone no. So I ring them up saying "this is so-and-so from so-and-so and I want you to come and fix the washing machine". Their answer - "I'll just take you through security ...". "What's the make of the machine, etc, etc.". B-O-L-L-O-C-K-S! It's data protection paranoia, and it serves no useful purpose.

You're also missing the point in another way. Security is obviously required for some interactions, but it the sometimes inappropriate degree of it that's being discussed.

Here's one that I find alright: Halifax Mortgages. They need name, postcode, DoB and monthly mortgage payment. Last time I called them I didn't have the exact figure for the payment but they accepted the amount to the nearest pound. To me, this displays common sense and flexibility.

It's a bit far fetched, or perhaps missing the point, to compare the security required for a washing machine services contract with the security required for bank accounts.

I agree with the OP here.

My parents bank with Bank of Scotland and though they're computer literate and not that old, they bank like they're in the 20th century - all cheques and paper records. I convinced my dad to sign up to online banking, saying it would be easy to set up. He had to phone the bank, who proceeded to ask about specific transactions as you describe. It being a joint account, they were asking about transactions he personally hadn't even made, while he's flapping about getting my mum to dig out her supermarket receipts. If a vague "about £xx" would've done, that certainly wasn't made clear.

I didn't realise I had 2 accounts, certainly seems odd for a forum to allow 2 identical username just with a different capitilisation of one letter

Anyway for those of you who claim that I wouldn't have been asked for the exact amount, well the call went like this:

TSB: You recently made a debit card transaction in Tesco. Can you confirm the amount
Me: I don't have the exact amount to hand, but I know it was about £40
TSB: Sorry, but I need to have an exact amount to put in. I can't see the answer in front of me which is why I have to key it in.
Me: But I don't remember the exact amount, I'm calling from my mobile and the receipt is at home.
TSB: Sorry, but I need an exact amount to key in.
