Halifax monthly fee debt

Hi all. I've just revived a letter from 1st credit acting on behalf of Halifax.stating that I owe 1200 pounds. This is from an account abandoned long ago, that was not overdrawn. It's from a monthly fee. Can anyone help?

  • help in what way, help you to pay it back? perhaps rather than abandon the account you should of closed it and would not have any fee's to pay off, at the end of the day it's down to you. Sorry but i have nothing to offer that would help you.
  • What I mean is, how can they charge for services that were not used? It was an account I forgot about. I had no idea I was being charged a monthly fee.

If it's longer than 6 years since you last heard from "1st credit" about this, then it may well be statute barred!
  • It's the first I've ever heard from 1st credit, bearing in mind that this account has not been used since 2006.

    What did the statements say?
  • I have no idea. They must have gone to an old address.

If statements have been going to your old address then it is unlikely to be statute barred.

I would suggest that your best course of action is to recognise this for the damage it may do to any future requests for credit that you may make. You need to contact 1st credit, find out what has gone on and see then if you can come to an arrangement to settle this somehow.

You should also get a copy of your credit report. Yiu can do this easily by setting yourself up with a free account at Noddle:

Like many have said, it's not the banks fault you chose not to service the account after you opened it. You agree'd to the monthly charge the moment you opened it.

I would be very surprised if it's statute barred. Maybe set up a payment plan with 1st Credit, and be done with it.

Take it as a lesson learned!
