My job is quite decent and I don’t feel like dumping it for a career that might or might not turn out well, gonna be hard to explain it at future job interviews

Your job is quite decent and you cannot afford a few £100 for your proposed business venture? Start cutting back on spending then and save some money, All businesses need cash despite what some people may say.
  • There can always be a bit of a blur between where marketing becomes sales.

I am no expert, I still dont know what the hell one of my colleagues does since she got the job title Head of Experimental Marketing for UHNW for a bank but it appears to involve lots of champagne and louboutin shoes, but to me to be the marketeer in face to face marketing then you are the person behind the scenes planing/ creating it all. If you are the pretty girl on the train station forecourt in a bikini handing out samples then your not in marketing.

My job is decent in terms of skills/ career development, but it's still entry level, I don't get paid much at all.

anyway I decided to shift my focus in learning marketing a bit more, so I bought this:

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Direct-Marketing-Week-IAW-Twomey/dp/034085765X/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=undefined&sr=8-1&keywords=direct+marketing+in+a+week+dee

thinking of going through the book, then apply to work as a marketer/sales part time (commission only) for a small business, perhaps a shop or another retail outlet. Is this something viable ?
  • Yes, I think so.

Give it some thought and start speaking to small businesses to see what they need. The year after finishing my business degree I got talking to an owner of a wedding dress and suit hire job and helped them out on their marketing strategy and plans to expand - it was fun, I got some pin money and good experience and they got to grow their business.
    Thinking critically since 1996....

Thank you. Did you draw an actual contract with the owner or was it cash in hand ?

slightly worried after someone mentioned Data Protection Act earlier, also a bit concerned that I'll get cheated/not paid with just a verbal agreement
  • On the basis they say they got pin money it sounds like they were doing it as a favour/ mutual experience and were given a small sum in appreciation for their efforts.
