So you are trying to dial 1280 for BT then 18185. I was not aware that a direct access code to 18185 has ever worked in this way (unless you are going to use 18185's 0800... access number after the 1280).

"during the day my V4 sends my calls out through 18185" !

Dialling 1280 overrides the V4 routing. If I go out on BT it is reasonably certain that I will get the best quality line - though not necessarily the cheapest !

Yes of course it overrides V4 - but is it then valid to dial 18185 after the 1280? That might explain why you get silence.

It sounds illogical but, having just tried it, I can confirm dialling 128018185 and then a valid telephone number works.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

We seem to be going round in circles here.

I said I got poor quality, NOT silence, when I used 18185. I overcame this by dialling 1280 (and overriding my V4 routing through 18185), then the number, then getting a good quality line through BT.

If I dialled 1280, then 18185, then my call WOULD go through 18185, but this would defeat the object of dialling 1280 to get away from 18185 to get better line !

OK I think that Heinz has cleared it up by testing it and confirming it actually works - something I did not know.
