british gas cancelled my direct debit

hi,
british gas cancelled my direct debit for 3 months I missed it due to having work done in my home even though they still sent me request to put in my meter readings online, they rang me this morning and told me that from1st may my gas direct debit was cancelled they addmitted it was their fault and have reinstated it but I am now worried as I am nearly 70 and disabled and it means that I have no backup as I save through the summer and only use the heating when it is really cold in the winter but now I am going to be afraid to use my heating as I am in debt to them by £15.00
so I have no stored credit to take me through the winter. what can I do? should the gas pay compensation for their mistake?
regards

  • Exactly the same thing happened to me !!
British Gas cancelled my direct debit that had been set up for 15 years.
I rang them maybe 8 times & spoke to somebody in New Dehli or wherever but I could not make them understand that THEY had cancelled the direct debit NOT ME.
I have had about 10 letters from them up to now & but hopefully it is now sorted.
I think that British Gas must have had some sort or a computer glitch somewhere but they will not admit it.

You haven't actually lost any money because of their mistake. You should now have more money in the bank than you would have had if they had taken the money off you.

That said, they may offer some small compensation for the inconvenience if you ask.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.
