I'm not sure if it's a regional thing but if somebody wrote 'gone away' on something here, it would mean they were on holiday (so would be returning). I would write 'Moved out DATE' and keep sending it back. They won't change it on your say-so but they may start to realise that she's lying to them about where she lives when every letter addressed to her is returned unopened.
  • Banks don't do this sort of joined-up thinking. Organisations of that size rarely do what a normal person would consider perfectly logical. Their records patently require an address, so the mail will still come to your property until the ex-SIL tells them where she is now residing.

I wouldn't lose any sleep or expend any more energy over this, I'd just chuck the mail in the bin.
  • 'Gone Away' is a common term in banking, accounts are often marked this way when post is returned until the account holder can be traced.

I would keep returning the letters to make sure they know she isn't living there, despite her claims.
  • Thanks everyone for your helpful tips

Lets hope she doesn't lose her driving licence then as it is my understanding that the DVLA will only send a replacement to the address on their database.
Happened to someone I know, good thing the current owners of the house were helpful and handed it over when the replacement arrived, me I would have binned it.
Find out who you are and do that on purpose (thanks to Owain Wyn Jones quoting Dolly Parton)
