Comp prizes as gifts...

I have to say I've had the same kind of reaction as the OP to giving away wins. Mentioning you got something for free seems to ramp up the indifference dial when they were very happy with it a second before.gentleorange wrote: »In both cases, I wouldn't have ordinarily given them anything, and they didn't give me anything, so where does the bad feeling come from?sleepyjones wrote: »If only these people understood how hard it actually is to win these things
If I were you gentleorange I'd keep your wins to yourself, they should know what happens when you look a gift horse in the mouth! :rotfl:0 -
Only time I've ever had a problem with family in regards to comping was when a cousin of mine found out about and thought she could give me a list of toys that her kids wanted for Christmas. She thought I would win them all and just give them to her, so she could save a few quid. She never even considered the time and effort it takes to win a little bit of something, never mind a load of expensive toys. She got told where to go as well.
Any other time, any wins I have given as gifts have always been appreciated, it's been mainly things like DVD's and t-shirts. I did win a portable DVD player and some DVDs a couple of years back that I gave my brother, who was thrilled. He uses it when he goes fishing overnight, and he was saving up for one, so he used the money for fishing bait. My family know I do competitions and use stuff as presents. They look forward to the little surprises on Christmas Day and birthdays. And I only give to my parents, brother and in-laws. Anybody else can go jump

OP, you should have told her you would return it, sell in on ebay, then give your friend a New Look voucher for the amount a cheap dress would cost. I wouldn't have let her keep it if she was ungrateful.I must remember that "Money Saving" is not buying heavily discounted items that I do not need. :hello:0

I've not been in the situation to give something as a gift yet. I have had a few wins I've given away though, to friends who have known it was a win and appreciated it!
if I were to give a win as a gift I certainly wouldn't tell them I'd won it!
I just enter and forget...hoping to win something!0 -
In my opinion I think its lovely to gives prizes as presents. I have a Christmas box with bits and pieces in that I would love for myself, but I am giving them as gifts. This means I will have more money for food & drinks over the festivities to share with these people also, Win/Win
My siblings however are green with envy when I give parents high value wins as gifts, and state they don't count because I won them! If I sold them and then bought something with the proceeds does that count more then?
Win Totals 2013 £3331 / 2014 £4815 / 2015 £3067 / 2016 £5617 / 2017-2023 £4106 / 2024 £2500 OVER £23K!!0 -
people are funny arent they-it takes more effort winning something than going out in one day and buying them giftsWhat goes around-comes around0

I spend more hours comping each day than the average 9 to 5 person works each day
I work bliddy hard for the few wins I get, but I am too soft each win goes to a member of the family as soon as I get it.
I think I have some posh perfume and 4 Flying Dolls put away not much good when you have2 sons
We have agreed on £100 limit per person this year for Christmas (me, hubby and 2 grown up kids) unless I can win 2 PS4s :rotfl: even one would do and I would sell it and buy both of my boys something of equal value
Myself personally I would accept anything from a bar of chocolate to a car and I would take it (even if I hated it) and say Thank You, I don't care if it was won or bought after all it is the thought that counts
As most of you have said it would probably be worth more if it had been won than it would have been if you had had buy it.
If one of my family members turned their noses up at me because I had given them a present I had won, I would take it off them, sell it on Ebay and buy something for myself.“I'd rather laugh with the sinners than cry with the saints.” - Billy Joel

My parents would be fine with me giving them things I'd won although I wouldn't just give them any old tat, it'd have to be something they'd be happy with (whisky for dad, face cream for mum...e.g!). I've already said if I win a PS4, it'll be my boyfriend's Christmas present - he knows this and is more than happy as he really wants one, plus I've already got him a gig ticket and would get some games too, so I'm still spending and picking things out for him - it just adds a little something extra!0

I have just won loads of baby stuff - I have given them to my sister in law who is delighted as she is due early next year. She didnt care they were 'free' as she knows I could never afforded to buy her all those gifts otherwiseWon a holiday every year since 2014......come on 2021!!

I won some posh fold-down wellies [HAHA it just changed that to willies after I typed it LOL] once and gave them as a random freebie to my mum who was over the moon. She said I should've saved them for a Christmas/birthday present and she'd have been just as pleased with them.
Personally, I wouldn't give wins as presents unless I was giving them in addition to something I'd spent a bit of money on. I'm all for buying sale stuff and giving that and maybe not spending as much as them, but I do think it's nice to have put some thought into it. If I did win something I thought they'd like, I'd give it as an extra saying it didn't cost me anything. I've taken lots of friends to the theatre, Ideal Home Show, hotels, etc - not for their birthday/Christmas, just a random free treat.
Oh, and if I won something I was going to buy them anyway and did decide to just give that, I definitely wouldn't be telling them (sort of contradicts above, but I mean only if it was something I was going to buy them anyway, like for my friend's son £15 iTunes vouchers or something.
No right or wrong with this. Each to their own...
