I feel like my relatives don't appreciate things I give them when they know I won them. At Christmas I gave someone a dress, it was her size and I thought she'd like it. She asked if I still had the receipt. When I told her I won it, she sort of huffed at me, and put the dress down. It was expensive too! I should have taken it back and stuck it on eBay...
Same thing with my stepmum. I gave her several boxes of fruit tea a few months ago. When she found out I won them she looked almost offended.
In both cases, I wouldn't have ordinarily given them anything, and they didn't give me anything, so where does the bad feeling come from? Has anyone else experienced this? I don't understand it!

I don't enter comps unless it's something I want for myself.0

My Girlfriend gave her mum and dad a 32" TV for Christmas as theirs broke and she was trying to win one for them. They were very grateful but her sisters attitude was YOU WON IT THOUGH SO IT DOESNT COUNT!!0

I generally don't tell people if it's for a birthday or Christmas. It's more stocking filler type things anyway. I don't think I'd give something like a dress that someone may not like, in case they don't and want to swap it. She probably wasn't turning her nose up because it was won, but because she didn't like it/wrong size/whatever and couldn't swap it. Or possibly because she was embarrassed that you'd given something expensive and she'd got you nothing?
Holiday, meals out, I've invited friends to come with me and they've been appreciative.
Things like teabags, calendars, I have given to people just because I think they'll appreciate them, and I do then say they're competition wins. Then again I'm fairly outspoken and if anyone was funny about it because it was a win then I'd tell them I won't bother putting anything in their direction in future.
Don't let it worry you, just don't treat them the next time. All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.
Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.0 -
I always enter for presents, and my friends and family certainly get things I couldn't have afforded to buy. I hope they appreciate them and luckily I've never had any of the responses above.0

Well, I don't enter for things I don't want either, but if you get an item of clothing that doesn't fit, or say, you discover you actually really don't like fruit tea, what do you do?0

I enter competitions for random tools / DIY items. My husband's a plumber so I assume he would like them. That said there is every chance the prize could be completely useless!
Oh and I will enter for the odd thing I don't plan on using if it is worth a substantial amount of money and stick it on ebay (if I win)!Wins of 20210 -

giving them away because they don't suit or you don't like is different to pooling them all up during the year and giving them as presents
what happens if you dont win anything0 -
i will probably be slaughtered for saying this, but IMO i wouldnt give winnings as birthday/christmas presents cos I think people expect you to have put a bit of thought into it ... unless it is something that someone really wants.
giving a perfume to my mum just cos i've won it doesnt really do it for me.
its not about spending money on people, it is, as they say, the thought that counts.0 -
