    Ask your local Council.

Our council has a good website with information about Disabled bays, dropped kerbs, and H bars.

I think I may have read that even if there is a disabled bay it wouldn't be for your sole use. Anyone with a blue badge could park there. That may be worth checking out as well. Does your flat not have allocated parking?
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

That's correct, so you have to take into account the chance of somebody else living in the same area with a BB being really annoying and parking in your nicely requested space :)

So, for the majority of the time, your partner will just be using the space to park before and after work... that'll be popular with the neighbours. As soon as they see him running to and from the disabled space every day, they will start abusing the space themselves.

You should only use a disabled space and display a disabled badge when the badge holder is present.

Councils tend to be very strict about these spaces, usually they are granted when a disabled person has an essential need to have the car right there at the door for the entire time they are home.

As you don't drive and don't have access to the family car while your other half is at work you're likely to be knocked back. You're essentially just wanting a space reserved for your partner coming home. If you have a family member who also comes and collects you to take you essential places during the day (shopping, day centres, hospital/GP appointments and socialising) you may be in with a chance but even then they could argue that your relative can park up the street and help you use a wheelchair to get to the car as if you can only manage 5 feet to the car they'll want to know how you get about when you get to your destination.

Even just post transplant when I had carers, family carers and partner in and out constantly and I was wheelchair bound 24/7 I never managed to get a space because the criteria in my area was that the spaces were for disabled drivers - not passengers.

Your application would be denied if you lived here because applicants "Must possess and be able to drive their own vehicle."

A friend was turned down as there was a residents' parking zone outside her house - she could rarely get her car into it due to the number of other residents in the street, but that was irrelevant apparently.

Have you asked about getting a wheelchair?
  • I am disabled and have a blue badge. I have just applied for a disabled bay outside my house and have been told that I will be getting one.
I was not asked whether or not I drive but I was asked to provide a photocopy of the registration document for our car.
    I am in Ayrshire, Scotland.

    Manchester's rules:
To qualify you must be a blue badge holder, in receipt of the higher rate disability living allowance or are 65+ on attendance allowance, and have a vehicle registered at your address.
No mention of the disabled person having to be the driver (which would be difficult in the case of our 5yo son!)

The only requirement is a V5C registered at the address the bay is to be painted. There is discretion if the vehicle is not taxed as disabled, but it is a slam dunk if it is.
