Am I entitled to ask? Or am I being cheeky?

I bought a car seat from Mother care 6 mths ago. The seat has developed a fault so I've been offered a refund or an alternative seat as they no longer stock the model I purchased. I told them I'd like a like for like replacement if possible. My local store has called to say that they've located an identical seat at another store and they've arranged a courier to deliver it to my local store.

Now.. this is the tricky bit... I paid nearly £300 for the seat and the Mother care website is now showing the price of the seat as under £100. Do I just suck it up and accept the replacement or do I have any rights to ask for a partial refund as the seat is now being sold at a drastically reduced price (even though it is showing as out of stock??) Cheeky but it is £200!! Anyone know whether I can ask for them to refund the difference?

You have no further rights, you can either take your money back or get the replacement.

Of course you can ask, but don't be surprised when the say no.

Don't forget you have had 6 months use of something that would be used for 12 months, so that would be £150 of use, so perhaps you could be cheeky and ask for a £50 refund?

Asking for £200 is taking the piddle!

    We're they offering a refund?
Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)

Of course you can ask for what you like.

As they have offered a refund, why don't you take that and then buy the replacement at the reduced price?

Just tell them you've had a change of heart - and will take the refund afterall.

Then buy the seat at the lower price. Sorted.
  • ^^ the two posts above cover this perfectly.

Take refund, buy seat, pocket £200.
    Thinking critically since 1996....
  • You can have a refund, or the replacement seat - but if they give you the refund you can't buy the seat as it's out of stock, and even if they say they've found one, they don't have to sell it you.

A lot of drastically reduced items are end of line, so it could be all stock will be recalled to head office and can't be sold.

The lifespan of a car seat is unlikely to be 12 months. Even though a baby outgrows it, the seat itself can still be used by a different baby.

Correct although they do have expiry dates which are from date of manufacture (not from purchase and first use date). Typically around 5-6 years and will have a sticker saying "do not use beyond xx/xx/xxxx date".

It's one of the things to check if you've had a baby seat for a while or you are getting a second hand one (not recommended at all!).

TBH, I would take the refund and buy a decent seat again. My child's safety (presumably the reason you paid £300 in the first place) would come first.

I doubt it's no coincidence that yours has developed a fault, they've been reduced to £100 and MC are no longer stocking them. I would just tell them on reflection that you'd rather not chance another one. Also, if you do take the one they've found and it develops a fault you're already 6 months down on your warranty, the new seat one won't start from the full 12/24 months again.

Which seat is it? Is it the xpedior ?Does it have the British or the European standard?
Is it a safety issue or a cosmetic issue?
