when should my new talktalk contract start?

Hallo!
I have been offered a good deal by TalkTalk:
Half price "Plus Broadband and Phone" normally £15.50, + £2 discount = £5.75 a month.
What bugs me, and I have complained about this to the chief exec., is that my new contract starts on the day when it was offered/negotiated rather then when the old 12 months contract ends I have argued that they should let the old contract expire before starting the new one!
I pay 12 months line rental in advance to save money, so my contract always ends well before my 12 months line rental.
They tell me this is the way it is, and I would like to know from you please if this is standard behaviour by telephone companies or, while I am here, lecky and gas too, thanks.

Fairly common as advance line rental is usually a shorter contract than broadband .0
