Bridesmaid Dresses Too Small

The girls were given a printout of their sizes from the shop, so have proof. The wedding is only two weeks away and no time to get anything else. The seamstress has said that she should be able to let them out and make all the necessary adjustments to make the girls look good. Should I know be asking the seamstress to measure the dresses before she starts the alterations. The shop said they came from the US but on reading some info on the shop looks like they have probably come from China. I can definitely get the girls to take their measurements again. Still not sure of how they should be handling this. The bride has complained but the girls individually have not done anything. My daughter was going to write but I said perhaps a phone call in the first place and then follow with a letter. Should mention we are in Scotland so courts etc slightly different.0

Don't know if it will work but they could try one of those Shrinking Violet body wraps. They may take a few centimetres off the girls for their comfort.
(Some reviews think they're really good - some just say a waste of money):heartsmil When you find people who not only tolerate your quirks but celebrate them with glad cries of "Me too!" be sure to cherish them. Because these weirdos are your true family.0 -
The seamstress has now said she will do alterations to make the dresses fit and look good.
Why don't you let her get on with it? I know a mistake has happened, but they are willing to rectify it. They cannot get new ones in 2 weeks, so let them do what they are willing to do. It is for one day and you wont know anything has been done to them.
Why get stressed out over it and wonder what your legal rights are, when a result has been sorted and things will be ok. Try and forget about it and enjoy the wedding.0 -
Starve them until the wedding is over.0

Rustyboy21, you are misunderstanding the problem. When you order dresses from this shop you only get them to a size nearest to the measurements that they shop have taken. The shop does not carry out the alterations this has to be done at the girls own cost. Now if the dresses had been a bit bigger than their measurements then there would have been no problem. As they are too small this is causing the problem and is going to cost a lot for the seamstress to work her magic. What I didn't mention previously both girls are a UK size 6/8 and have been since they were teenagers.
Bantex - Starving them would not be an option!!!!! as they are both tiny0 -
As time is of the essence, you'd be better off going to somewhere like Debenhams where they have a good range of prom/bridesmaid dresses, and just buy them "off-the-peg". They do mail order and for two slim bridesmaids, you should be able to get a couple of nice matching dresses for around £100 each, if not slightly less.
They have a bridesmaid section....

My sis got married in a Debenhams dress and it was lovely!
Reject the bridesmaid dresses under SOGA, don't let rude sales assistants put you off. There appears to be an error in translation somewhere, if they are from China, the sizes nearly always come up very small."I may be many things but not being indiscreet isn't one of them"0 -
The dresses could have been ordered from America but made in China then shipped to the supplier in America. That could explain how long they took to come.
When the dresses didn't fit my first resction would be to check what sizes were ordered and what sizes the dresses actually were.
If they are the nearest size to the sizes required then that is what you agreed to. You were told you would need to get it altered but no mention of how much, I presume.0 -
My understanding from the seamstress that the girls are using is that they should have ordered the nearest bigger size to allow for any alterations. If this had been the case there would have been no problems as they knew some alterations may be necessary. The whole problem is they are too small. These were not cheap dresses £190 each and the girls initially thought they were buying made to measure dressers. It was only later on at the time of ordering them were they told they had to get them altered by themselves at their own cost.0

Given the tight time scale, I'd give the shop just 4 days to take the dresses out to the correct size (can it be done? This can be quite tricky!), then if they can't do it, reject them under SOGA and buy some from Debenhams.Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')
No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)0 -

This then does clear it up a bit more for me, you shouldn't be having to do all the running around, they have supplied it incorrectly, so you should be able to reject them.
Issue is the deadline. How did you pay for them? have you spoken to the retailer to get them to pay for the alteration work, seeing that most of the alteration was down to them?
Could you use S75 if you paid on card? Give more payment details and the boffins on here can help you more.0
