But you follow a differnt path to most here, you are a professional providing services that you are accountable for.

But read the forum section heading, something like "in my home inc diy".

There lies the issue, there are often 2 ways to go, and as this is a money saving forum I will always suggest that there are alternatives, to say only a structural eng can do the calcs is simply not correct, isn't it??

I've clarified already what I was saying and you've chosen to ignore that post. If a building control officer wants to see the calculations because of the span, they have to be provided by someone with their own professional indemnity insurance - a structural engineer. If the opening is sufficiently small and the build method of the house appropriate for a catnic or reinforced concrete, great. The calcs are already done by catnic and their SEs.

This has nothing to do with the OP again. Read and absorb their post and reply to that. The correct path for the OP involves professionals. The OP wants professionals to carry out the entire job for them and is unhappy that it hasn't been organised for them. They OPs window company does not even think that building control needs to be involved - they absolutely do, regardless of the size of opening. As a professional, I've offered important guidance, completley relevant to the scenario. Also, the OP is not DIYing and so the board title has little relevance.

I won't reply on this thread again unles the OP asks for further help. I've offered my advice and shared my experience as asked. It was relevant. You offer your DIY advise where it's relevant.
Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.
  • Thanks both for your advice/input - as much as this is a moneysaving forum - I (and imagine more) use it as a general advice one - not purely focused on 'what is cheapest'.

We want to do any structural changes absolutely by the book, as planning on doing this place up as much as we can and then selling on and hopefully being able to afford a place with an extra bedroom in 5/10 years (thinking about the next kid...if that happens) and the last thing we want is issues with having done work without required permissions when we move on...

We're considering our response to the window company at the moment, but you've all been helpful so we understand the topic a little more..

You can disagree with me all you want, that is your prerogative, but read again the title of this section and consider where it is posted.
To clarify it is a section in a money saving forum and includes DIY

The priority has to be the cheapest best option.

PS, you won't offend me, you offer a pro approach, I, a skinflints view.
And as always the OP, and others, read this and make there own mind up.
But you cannot say "only", when there are other and cheaper options, that will cost people money.
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed
