Spoke to BT on 150, and I am not affected by the price rise, because I paid Line Rental Saver in advance till April 2015.
I CAN leave, but they will not refund the line rental.

The 40GB limit on Infinity doesn't change, I simply start paying £18 a month normal price when the contract ends, which is not considered a price rise.

No excuses to leave early penalty free.

You are affected! Your Line rental price is rising.

They tried this on last year (at the 150 level).

Escalating to the CEO's office brought a different approach.

It was discussed in this long thread from this time last year's increase announcement:

You are affected by the price rise because your call charges are going up.

You can leave penalty free and you will be refunded whats left of the line rental saver payment.

You have to wait until you are notified of the price increases.

Let BT know you are going to leave within 30 days of being told of the increases then wait for your final bill which will then be amended to refund you the line rental saver.

To contact the CEO office to make a complaint:

NB. This isn't his personal email (gavin.e.patterson@bt.com)

I got the notification of the price change.
My 18 months broadband ends December and also paid the Saver line rental until next summer.
Sort of happy with BT but would be nice to upgrade to infinity - do you think they would give some sort of offer if I call?

Had to continue with BT as we were also happy with the service so far and no one in the house wanted to switch. On talking to the Cust. Rep I asked if she could do something for me for staying, as I thought if I threaten to leave, then I should be able to actually do it. After a 5 min on hold she came back with this deal. I was upgraded to BT infinity 2 (from BT infinity 1 unlimited) for a "fixed" price of £20 per month on a 18 month contract. If I kept BT Infinity 1 would have paid around £23 something from December onwards. For me personally the deal was good enough to continue. I also did the line rental saver for a year. However my experience is always a hit and miss with the customer service reps, especially during contract renewals. Luckily I never have to call to complain that much. It is worth a try to see if you get some offer.

  • Lucky you. I just got off the phone to them and they refused to budge. I have two accounts with them, both phone and standard broadband. I wanted to cancel one (don't use it any more) and upgrade the other to infinity. To cancel they wanted over £100 (30+ for the month's notice, 30+ to cancel early and 30 for the termination charge). When I queried the termination charge, I was told that it could only be waved if I moved house and took BT at the new address. Why was this, I asked. Oh, they responded, it's because that's a customer who is being loyal. Hang on, say I, I'm prepared to upgrade the other one and pay you yet more money. Nope, they say, it's two different accounts and there is nothing they can do about it. Fine say I, cancel the account and don't upgrade the second, I'll be calling to cancel that one as soon as it comes to the end of the contract and going with someone who gives a hoot about retaining customers.

I think the lesson for us all is DON'T TAKE A CONTRACT WITH BT.

So who do we take a contract with then ???
  • I've looked at both TalkTalk and Plusnet. It looks like TT are quite a bit cheaper than BT for what I'm looking for and Plusnet a little bit cheaper (after their deal stops). I guess the standard message from MSE is keep checking and switch if you can find it cheaper or you're not happy. I'm not happy and I think this is cheaper.
  • My Brother in law is with Talk Talk. Over the year they had nothing but problems. Still not sorted. At times they have no broadband service at all, particularly in the night. TT says it is BT at fault, and of course BT says the faults lies within TT territory. They do of course pay just £18 per month for line rental and unlimited broadband. Compared to BT this is almost 50% of what I am paying. Though I had been extremely lucky and happy with the service from BT in the last year. Happy is the reason I am staying with them, even though they are bloody expensive. I know no one with Plusnet though.
