Contact Eon, explain the situation to them, give them tenancy agreement end dates etc and hope they can be reasonable and remove it if you pay any charges you should be liable for.

Ultimately, you didn't close an account in your name I am unsure how your landlady could transfer something over that she has no legal right to do so, after all, it isn't her account to cancel. They may be awkward and not remove it, which it is within their rights to, but hopefully you can work something out.

    Good luck.
  • OP - would be good if you removed the name of the previous tenant from your posts. He may not want to be featured in your story.

I had something similar when my student days ended. Shared house phone bill was in my name. I paid the last bill, moved out, and thought the account was closed. I later found it wasn't - I was traced to my parents house and chased for payment of £140. I proved I had moved out, proved in fact I was out of the country for much of the period of itemised billing - but to no avail. Ultimately BT said the account was in my name and I was therefore responsible, and I had to pay it. It was a lot of money back then as well!
Good luck, but I think you might have to take it on the chin.

    Hi Francescaf2704,

    Welcome to the form.

As you said the account got closed when you weren’t responsible for the property, we can definitely look at changing the date for you, if you’ve got your tenancy agreement.

You would need to send us a copy of this, so we can look in to it for you.

When we share with Equifax, we give a true reflection of the status of an account at the time of the share.

If there were any missed or late payments on your account, this would have been shared.

Where the share is a true reflection of an account, it’s unlikely this would be changed.

I hope this is of interest, let me know if I can help anymore.

    Thanks

    Amy:)

In other words, b-u-g-g-e-r off, we're not interested. We won't amend the data no matter what the circumstances, if WE consider SOMEONE owed us money.

The underlying problem is that energy/utility companies are allowed to report excessive data to the CRAs. They should only be allowed to report defaults where there was intent.

Lesson: try not to provide the companies with personal data that allows them to place such damaging information against you.

    Hi GingerBob,

We don't just share negative information where accounts have outstanding balances, we also share information where balances are paid promptly.

In these cases, we share positive information with Equifax.

How about not reporting anything? Then there'd be no chance of you making the type of catastrophic error that is becoming increasingly common as more and more organisations are bribed by the CRAs to report on their clients.

Good bit of spin though. Some might just think you've got your clients' interests at heart when sharing so called positive data.

As Eon are being such dipsheets on this you may have to take them to the energy ombudsman and report the to the ICO for data protection act breaches for recording false and inaccurate information.

If the EON bill was in your name, did you give them the final meter readings when you moved out?
