Z1 Compact is more powerful than the S5 Mini

is that processor speed? I thought S5 mini may have been better overall...as want phone to be "future proof" for the next 2 years

Samsung and HTC are a bit misleading with their 'mini' phones, you'd think they're are just smaller versions of the flagship phones but they're not, instead they feature cheaper hardware (slower processor, older camera etc.) and only bear a passing resemblance to their namesakes.

The Z1 compact on the other hand features the same high end hardware as the Z1 (fast processor, decent camera) but has a smaller screen and lower resolution simply due to the smaller screen.

It depends on what you want from the device, I dislike the fact the Mini phones have such misleading names but they can still be decent phones if the price is right. What phoneaare you using at the moment? Sony's approach to Android is fairly minimal as they use a mostly stock Android install with some of their applications added while Samsung customise Android more heavily with their Touchwiz UI, if you already have launched Samsung device you may prefer sticking with the interface. If you haven't already I'd recommend going to a store and having a look at the phones in person as you may find you prefer the look and feel of one of them.

The Z1 Compact is due for an update soon, called the Z3 Compact just to be awkward. The Z1 Compact may come down in price then.

currently I have a old Sony Arc S.....but I am out of contract and need something a bit more responsive to apps to etc. I was interested in a mini size so it can be pocket sized. Samsung interested me as I have other Samsung gadgets in the house too. A camera is useful but 8M seems reasonable then other use is for calls, texts, using apps etc
