Specsavers hidden cost in 2 for 1 offer

I popped into my local specsavers on Saturday to buy some new specs following eye test a couple of weeks previous - been using this branch for a long time and always found okay.
After selecting a couple of pairs, one £95 and one £125 I was asked to wait for a fitting check.
Very pleasant girl went through the process and now ready to pay. I was expecting the cost to be £125.
She said there was an additional charge of £20 as I wanted 2 prescriptions - one for reading, one for distance. Now I'm sure this has never cropped up before and there is certainly no mention of this in the adverts all over the shop - surely this is why many people buy 2 pairs.
Not wishing to make a fuss but feeling somewhat irritated I asked to speak to manager who assured me that this had always been the case and in fact the charge used to be higher. I pointed out that there was no mention of this in their 2 for 1 offers in the shop but she advised she was sure there was 'something in the terms and conditions'.
There was obviously not going to be any movement on this and as it was almost 5 o'clock and I needed to order some specs I reluctantly paid this hidden fee. In the greater scheme of things I know it's only £20 but I do feel that the advertising is misleading.

So there was nothing in the shop that said
Second pair from £69-£149 ranges, to the same price range or below and to the same prescription
which is part of the T&Cs for the offer

  • The offer seems counter productive when in reality you have one prescription, its just your prescription has a reading add which is part of your one prescription. However, its quite normal for this kind of condition in this promotion.

Vision Express did used to do something similar a few years a back but some people want 2 pairs because they have reading and distance prescriptions and can't get on with varifocals. VE adjusted the offer to 2 pairs for the same prescription for near and distance so theres no limitation.

Exactly this, it's always been like that.

I've checked their website and cannot easily find any mention of paying more if lense prescriptions are different. I still believe this to be very misleading.

T&Cs at bottom of page. The deal is for same prescription so you appear to be getting off lightly as they are only charging you an extra £20 to have different lenses instead of refusing you the offer.

So, you feel that large signs in the shop advertising 2 for 1 are mitigated by small print at the 'bottom of the page' on a website? Really? Legally I'm sure it's okay but as not mentioned in the shop I find this misleading.

I think the large signs in the shop perhaps were 'mitigated' by having words like "terms and conditions apply", or something similar, on them.

Clearly it is misleading... you were misled.

Why didn't you just have 2 pairs of glasses with the same prescription and have varifocals..
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.

Nice idea but I can't wear varifocals & these aren't part of the deal. But thanks anyway. The point of this is I'm not trying to scam specsavers, but just get what I expected from the big banner advertising - I like my specsavers shop but I'm sure this additional charge has never applied before... its not mentioned on in shop advertising (as far as I know) & it was a surprise to me when this was mentioned just at the paying bit. Very disappointed in this.
