Maybe your wife's husband can provide the financial help she needs. After all, he does earn 40k.

How about her getting some bar work in the evening/weekends to work around her volunteering - but it is my view that if you are good enough you don't have to give your services free

I don't think you will be able to get any financial assistance when you have an income of £40k and there are just the 2 of you. I would suggest that you are probably more in need of advice on budgeting if you are struggling on that wage.
You are currently earning almost £10k more than our joint income and we manage OK.

here's a suggestions for all you people earning less than me, go get some qualifications, study at night after work, go to uni, local college, on-line learning, classes at the weekend, there's so much available nowadays. Ask for more responsibility at work, tell your boss you're looking to move up the ladder and see if he/she will support you. Then you can look for a position that takes you up the ladder and into the next earnings level. in 2/3 years you will be earning more than me, and believe me, if you apply yourself, you will be successful and not have to budget so hard to feed 3 kids on a paltry amount. Makes me wonder if you are eating properly at all, are you getting your vegetables and minerals? Are your kids getting proper nutrition? Are you? Its all very well budgeting, but why when you can go out there and realise your potential with a bit of hard work. Or are you like most people, in a safe job for the last 15 yrs, the CV covered in dust. God help you if you get made redundant

    40k, I could keep a family of 5 on that, I keep 3 people and a house on 12k a year

You're not receiving 12k though. You'll also be getting benefits on top.

Doesn't seem much point doing all that if I wouldn't even be able to financially support my partner without claiming benefits?

Rather than just going to university, finishing it and coming out with a degree is also useful, some advice you might have passed on to your wife.;)

Not everyone can earn 40k. We do need people doing lowered paid jobs, such as working in supermarkets, etc.

Why does someone on 40k "need" benefits?

You certainly know how to ask for advice don't you! For your information I have been through redundancy 4 times and am most certainly not in a safe job, nor have I been in the job for 15 years.
I don't understand where redundancy comes into your situation anyway. You are earning £40k and your wife has been at Uni for 2 years. Your situation has changed little as any grants / student loans were supposed to be for her education. Or was that money actually spent 'improving' the family lifestyle.
