You might find they call it
    serpentine belt
    aux auxiliary drive belt

They don't just "come off" though, so something is wrong, probably a bearing gone in one of the pulleys, try rocking the pulleys side to side (I guess it is the water pump, and that is where the coolant is escaping.) and see if they are free to turn (except the big one on the crankshaft- it wont turn with fingers) in case something is seized and thrown the belt off.

You need tools to fit it, as there is a tensioner pulley that has to be released to get it on, then moved to tension the belt properly.

try google fitting aux belt focus

The auxiliary belt and the timing belt are not the same thing - both belts of course, but their purpose and consequences are not even close.

Is he replacing the timing belt also?
As i'm sure it will need to come off to remove the water pump from the block anyway so worth doing

Ask your garage if it needs doing, they should last around 10 years, or about 100,000 miles, I think.
As you trust what he says, get his advice.

It would be more money wasted if the engine has been damaged, I wouldn't think the water pump failure would hurt it, and the car probably has 4-5 years left in it at the most, 20 would be a good life for a basic car.

I am humbled by your patience in ontinuing to post.

T said it was the original belt, hence the wear and tear comment.

My computer is also in limp mode [running at c. 20%] started Mon and I have had hours on phone to Primus, new router, and still it drops constantly, can't see ems, re-load/access google etc.etc., toolbars and files all disappeared. It was due to next village fixit man today, more expense, and now delay.

So, it's one of those weeks, or fortnights. No car also means no antiquing[London mkt most wks]and no special qtrly antiques auction Tuesday. Timing couldn't be worse for all of this. There, I've had my rant.

Bed, book, hwb, tennis on t'wireless, beloved Guardian... that's me done for today.

    Bless you both.
