I've had some close calls near the local school, kids running out from behind large 4x4s when just 100yrds away there's a manned crossing. I cannot for one second believe that there's never been an accident there.
Another reason why I think these Chelsea tractors should be banned from parking close to the school gates.

I had a child do something similar in Coventry a few years ago. The girl was around 8 and I ran over her foot. A gaggle of women, including the child's mother (I assumed) came out of nearby houses and took the child away. I stopped but couldn't do much as none of the women could speak any English. I gave my details to another child and later that day a man came round to my house to find out what happened. He became quite distressed when I suggested that the police be informed. I didn't push it and heard nothing more.

It's a requirement in this case to report it to the police if you hit a person. If they had reported it and you hadn't you'd be in a deep pile of !!!!.

  • Was a bus driver & had 2 non accidents as the cop shop call them. 1st one stepped backwards off kerb, bus caught her shoulder & she ended up on hands/knees - when I said I had to get her an ambulance & the cops she ran off. 2nd one on a mobile phone stepped straight into path of bus which was in a bus lane & slowly approaching a red light. He too ran off, but not before he threatened to beat me up. Both times speed was between 2-5mph. Still shakes you up though. This was many years ago now. A moments inattention is all it takes.

But isn't due to your diligence.

There are all sorts of reasons why the child may have been away from their parent. Parents, in general, do look after their children but accidents do happen.

    Such is life, and death.
Young kids always find ways to slip past even the most diligent of parents.
  • Yes, they do but that child could now be dead. The parents and I would have to live with it.
I would have got the blame no doubt, not the mother who had no idea the child had even gone.

Perhaps the child was not even with the mother at the time?

And at least there is no blame for anything as nothing untoward happened.

Yes it was with the mother, or was supposed to be. I had to go find her. She was unaware child not with her.
I know and thank my lucky stars that a accident was avoided, but it was so very very close. Really gave me a fright.can only hope the mother has learnt a lesson.
It could so easily have ended tragically.

Far too much of this "its always someone elses responsibility not the parents". If the o/p had milled that child, he could have ended up doing jail for it. And the parents will blame the driver.

If you have a three year old - you have to do the thinking for the child - you have to think 20 seconds ahead all the time. In this case the parent didnt even know the child was gone. How was that responsible parenting??

Genuinely infuriates me how little effort people put in these days looking after their kids then up in arms when something goes wrong.

The mother was in the shop, oblivious to the fact their child was out and away.
