very nearly hit a child..

Driving through the village, a small child ran out of shop straight in front of me. Managed to stop with about a inch to spare.
No parent in site. Child was about 3, ran in to shop to find mother oblivious to the child being missing!
Before anyone asks I was not speeding, if I was child would be dead.
Why can't parents watch their children.
This has really upset me. That child could so easily be dead now.

But isn't due to your diligence.

There are all sorts of reasons why the child may have been away from their parent. Parents, in general, do look after their children but accidents do happen.

    Such is life, and death.

    Quite unlikely.
If you had been exceeding the posted speed limit then the incident would not have occurred as you would have already driven past the shop before the child ran out on to the road.
Understeer is when you hit a wall with the front of your car
Oversteer is when you hit a wall with the back of your car
Horsepower is how fast your car hits the wall
Torque is how far your car sends the wall across the field once you've hit it

More likely dead because I wouldn't have stopped in time.

Glad you and the child are okay. Can be very scary.

I watched a child of four run out from a nursery years ago, straight across a very busy road to see their friend.

Somehow managed not to get hit, but terrifying to watch. Distraught mother had been putting younger child in buggy at the time. Child oblivious to it all.

You wouldn't have been there, so nothing would have occurred.
If you want scary, then try riding a motorcycle through the City of London/West End while on a time limit to reach ;)

Anyway, your obvious diligence kept the little lamb alive so all well and good.

All sorts of reasons? You mean like a parent not looking after their toddler?

Can you imagine the horror of hitting and killing a child and having to live with that?

Cant imagine the parent saying oh well not to worry accidents do happen.

A parent not looking after their child would be one reason. There are of course others.

Fortunately the OP has no horror to live with in this case.

It was a very, very scary thing. Keep seeing the kids face in front of me. It was so very close.
Can't imagine how I would live with it if I had hit her.
  • kids can be little monsters sometimes, I remember when twin 1 was walking with me and my wife in the high street in town, I was holding her hand when on the other side of the road she spotted a lovely akita dog and tugged from so hard and bolted for it my heart leapt lucky enough I managed grab back of hood inbetween the parked cars before she made it into the road because a bus would have mowed her down. I am always on high alert and pins when are out with her (she 10 now) she has ADHD and has no fear of danger and although we teach all about road safety, distractions when out and about road safety for her and others go's completely out of the window.

I remember going to my ex girlfriends house to pick her up there were some 14-15 yr olds with little ones around 6-7 yrs old (could have been siblings), the were waiting to cross the road after I had passed but for some silly reason the one teen shouted "GO" and I heard him through my open window and the little ones run out, lucky I wasn't going fast (about 10MPH) when I slammed anchors stopped, then a second later the little ones run onto the bumper and wing of the car. I was shaking in my seat, got out to check them over and see if they were OK, the teens were speechless just stood there in shock, little ones were unhurt and ok but crying, they just down the road on the side they were trying to cross to, so parked and I took them home knocked the door and explained exactly what had happened, what the one teen said to cause the incident the parent flipped out on him, I was still shook up hours later, and felt sick that had I travelled faster they may well have been dragged under the car by my front wheel.
