Been given a 4s that's locked to vodaphone network, I'm on virgin, I've heard about jail braking iPhones but really haven't got a clue, what's the downside of jail braking a 4s?

The downside being you can brick your iPhone, most people are fine though.
If you just want it unlocked pop in a Vodafone PAYG, add £20 of credit and fill in the unlock request to get the job done properly.0 -

Soft brick may well be recovered by flashing new firmware .
Hard brick need new component/ motherboard .0 -
Jailbreaking is pointless. It also reduces the value of the phone. Also any JB will result in it re-locking with the next iOS update.0

Why exactly do you want to jailbreak?====0 -
When jailbreaking, there is always a small risk that you will permanently damage your phone, so bsms1147 is right, if you're only interested in jailbreaking it in order to unlock it, you would be better off having it unlocked by Vodafone. If the person who gave you the phone is an ex-Pay Monthly customer, get them to fill out that form as Vodafone will unlock the phone for free, otherwise it will cost you £20.
How could it possibly reduce the value of the phone? When selling a phone, you would inevitably perform a factory reset, which would reverse the jailbreak.Jailbreaking is pointless. It also reduces the value of the phone. Also any JB will result in it re-locking with the next iOS update.0 -

First step is to factory reset the phone .
If sound is still faulty then get a repair estimate .
Either use Vodafone sim or pay to unlock .
You said you where given the phone now you are saying something else .Is the phone network blocked ???0 -
The phone was given to me, but because there's no sound, it's tuned out it was purchased on ebay. You said you where given the phone now you are saying something else .Is the phone network blocked ???
Phone settings have been reset.
Still no sound
I'll get an estimate, and post back0 -
This thread makes no sense. You're considering jail breaking but you don't want to jailbreak. It was given to you but you bought it on eBay. It needs unlocking because the sound doesn't work? Difficult for anyone to help!0
