What's the position with connecting flights?

I booked through Air France to go to St Maarten from London. The journey involved a connecting flight from Heathrow to Paris and vice versa on the return journey. The return, long haul flight was delayed by 1.5h, but this meant AF booked me on to a much later flight to London - 6 hours later than the original. Am I entitled to compensation, on the basis of the total delay in my journey? Or does the fact that the first plan was only 1.5 hrs late scupper me?
Thanks!
