Refused life insurance-how can I get cover?

Options
Just did an online application for life insurance with Beagle Street. I got refused-I think it's because I had a lump on my neck that I had to see a specialist over. Lump turned out to be nothing. Also I got asked if I'd had any pregnancy complications, and I had bleeding early on in my pregnancy, again all turned our fine.

My bmi is low, I don't smoke or drink and am relatively young (28)

So my question is, what can I do now to get life insurance, and now I've been refused somewhere, will it make it more difficult to obtain life insurance?

  • Refusal doesn't normally have to be declared. Each company will make its own determination. It's only cancellation that screws things up.

Normally most life insurance applications will ask if you've ever been refused life cover and so you would need to declare this. This doesn't necessarily make it harder, but they just want to know and may choose to investigate it further if they feel the need to.

You should get protection through a broker, like an IFA, as they can speak to various underwriters regarding your medical conditions before putting in an application. This will save you a lot of time and can probably get the better rates, particularly if there are any increases in premiums.
Stephen Covey once said that "when you teach once, you learn twice". That is the primary reason for my participation on the forums as an IFA.

Although I strive to provide accurate information in my posts, there may be the odd time when I fail. Yes I know it's hard to believe but even Your Hero can make mistakes. Apologies in advance.

Agreed - the refusal should be disclosed to the broker

There are hundreds of them if not thousands.

Whilst you can communicate with them online/ email etc an advisory broker is not going to do the complete sale using a single online form as they must ask questions etc to demonstrate they are providing an appropriate product for your needs.

When you do unadvised sales, like most consumer insurance is, then web forms are fine as its the buyer that must ensure that the product meets their needs instead.

You can either look for a local IFA or a protection broker

Try to get some local recommendations from friends/relatives etc.

They aren't all money grabbing so and sos, but a lot are! (Commission based ones have an especially poor reputation)

Definitely don't just deal with a stranger online. (Especially ignore any pms you might get from unscrupulous brokers who lurk on MSE looking for sales opportunities.)

Agreed - personal recommendation from someone who has used the broker before would be my advice.
