Why did you chose Argos as opposed to a local independant?

I feel your pain OP. Had a similar experience a couple of years ago. Ordered 2 garden sheds with a scheduled delivery date and time between 7am and 1pm. Was up & about by 6.30am on the day, looked out of the bedroom window and noticed some debris in the road outside the house, thought nothing of it. About 10am wandered outside and realised that the flat-packed sheds had been parked down the side of the house and just left there. The plastic strips used to secure them on the lorry has been cut up and left lying in the road (which is what I had spotted earlier). Phoned Argos to complain and advise them that their delivery contractor had (a) arrived outside the agreed hours (god alone knows what time they turned up, it was summer, our bedroom window was open and we live in a very quiet street, must have been a "stealth lorry"), (b) hadn't asked us to sign for the goods and (c) had left their rubbish all over the road. The numpty on the other end of the phone couldn't have been less interested, saying that it was all the delivery company's fault and nothing to do with them.

With hindsight - and given how totally and utterly !!!! the sheds turned out to be - we should have denied that they had been delivered at all and asked for our money back. After all they had no proof that we had received the goods did they?

Anyway lesson learned. Will never ever buy anything bigger than a toaster from Argos again.
