whats cheaper, an electric oven or gas oven?

I want to replace our built in oven. I want to stick to gas, OH wants an electric oven as her family have persudaded her a gas oven is unsafe because of the Bic incident with carbon monoxide leaking from the oven.
I proposed just putting in a carbon monixide alarm if she's that concerned. But still fixated on it.
Just to keep peace in the household. I am willing tobudge. Just need to know what is more economical a gas or electric oven? I pointed out that there is a massive 100% green tax on electricity and is going to cost more - but dont really know the actual cost difference.

A gas oven is cheaper to run but more expensive to maintain. The cost of cooking food is cheap anyway so it's really just down to personal preference and if she doesn't want a gas oven then you might find she never wants to use it.
Assume you use an oven for an average 30 minutes every day per year and the oven is rated 1,800W and the thermostat cuts out so it's only heating for 15 minutes of the 30 minutes then at 12.5p/kWh the total cost per year is only £20. It's not enough to be a concern.:footie:
Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S) Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money.0 -
Gas 3.5p per kWh.
Standard rate electricity 12p per kWh.
You do the maths.
However, as MJ points out, the maintenance/repair costs are higher with gas, as they need a GSR engineer. No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -

Hmm. I didn't account for the repair costs. But in all honesty. I've never had a gas engineer come in to do any maintenance on a cooker. The only time I needed a gas engineer was in-between changing cookers. That's usually free with cooker purchase as well.0 -
Ok spoke to my OH's peeps and they've told me that an electric oven does not need the annual checkups. But a gas oven does.
Was not aware of this requirement at all. The thing is we have a gas hob - doesn't that need a 6 month checkup as well? - which would be the same cost as doing both the gas hob and gas oven together?
Or does the hob not need maintenance.0 -
I think you're on to a loser here. There is no requirement for any 6 month gas check up (although a landlord has to carry out a 12 monthly gas check). I suspect they will continue to come up with arguments for electric whatever you say.0

As far as I know there are no safety issues with gas ovens, neither is there any requirement to check them regularly (unless in a rental house).
BUT I'd go for gas hob + electric oven every time. I don't have a huge amount of experience with gas ovens, but I've found electric is easier to control and usually comes with more functions (eg. defrost setting, very low temperature for slow roasting).
In the end I suppose it comes down to who does most of the cooking and what do they prefer?0 -
We always had a gas oven but when we needed a new one we found the electric ones were much cheaper to buy and found the difference in usage costs is minimal.
We never got our gas oven checked every 6 months, don't think it was ever checked in all the years we owned it. Hob has never been checked either.0 -

What !!!!????? I have a gas oven that's nearly 50 and it costs me nothing to maintain... :rotfl:0 -

Thanks for pointing that out, sorry yes it was 12 month checkups, not 6.0 -
I got a New World all gas cooker last year and on the plus side the oven heats up really, really quickly and I've noticed that my fuel bills are noticeably lower than when I had an all-electric cooker. On the downside it's not fan assisted so you need to get to know it, and the grill is useless.0
