    Makes my blood boil.

We've got all those Scottish threads and now we're going to get a load of UKIP threads.

What happened to arguing about which is the best house price index or the best stuff to stock up on if we all move to a cave? The important issues!

It would be nice if they could filter out the terrorists though.

It's because it forces a by-election, with the tory defector running as a UKIP MP.

He had close to a 30% majority, so it's fueling fear in the tory party that one of their MPs will make their way to be the first UKIP MP in parliament. If he can turn around tory support into UKIP support at the drop of a hat it will be a big problem for the tories (and other political parties).

Secondly, what he has stated about internal talks in the tory party and the promised referendum is pretty damaging.

I've heard him and seen him on the news talking about stuff, but wouldn't be able to name him if I saw him.

Edit, both Paddypower and Ladbrokes are offering the shortest odds on Carswell winning the by-election as a UKIP MP.

BBC state it would be a seismic change in UK politics should Carswell be able to turn around the tory support to UKIP support.

Odds are current 10-1on for UKIP to win with Tories out at 5-1 so seems a dead cert for UKIP.

My view is that Clacton was high up on the UKIP hitlist and Carswell thought he would lose his seat and wanted to remain on the gravy train. We'll see whether it works for him at the general election.

Hamish, Your post (no.13) is disgraceful.I have reported it. Why don't you try debate rather than photoshop to make your point.
You could start by countering Douglas Carswells resignation speech.
It's not all about the EU, it's about the undemocratic way we are governed, the EU being just one facet of this.

Using humour to make a point is a well established element of debate.

There is nothing "disgraceful" about a satirical political image.

Nobody is seriously comparing Farage to Hitler.

It is all over facebook and twitter precisely because it's absurdly funny, but makes the point rather well that right wing charismatic leaders with little in the way of real policy, but a knack for blaming all our troubles on immigrants, don't have a very good track record....

    Why?

A back-bench tory resigned, will probably win a low turnout by-election, and then probably lose the real election a few months later.

IMO he'll be consigned to the dustbin of political history with all the other party jumpers who left mainstream politics to chase ideology.

There is nothing undemocratic about the EU or the representative democracy we live in.
