Net immigration to UK up "significantly"

It's a new report, so not much more info at the moment.

Basically net immigration to the UK has increased by 68,000 on the previous year, now up to 243,000.

The coalition now have a mountain to climb to reduce it to "tens of thousands" by 2015.

How many times does it need to be said Graham.....
It is quite clear why politicians like to talk tough on immigration to get elected, and then quietly allow it to remain high anyway once in office

There was never any prospect of it dropping to tens of thousands.

Which is of course a very good thing.

Can we shuffle them up to Scotland before they go independent?

Puerto Rico wants independence as well so maybe in exchange we can shuttle the almost 700K Brits living in the US there. Send the fake British pubs that serves craptacular beer to San Juan or Ponce as well.

On the back of this a Tory MP has resigned from the Tory party and will now stand for UKIP in the by-election which will now follow.

He's pretty damning over the internal talks in the tory party when it comes to the "promised" referendum and therefore finds his position untenable.
  • UKIP .

    Speaking of which....

Migrants from Romania and Bulgaria accounted for just 16,000 of the 68,000 rise, despite a year of UKIP scaremongering prior to the change in rules.

We seem to be missing the 29 million 'Roma' migrants that UKIP promised us were coming.

    Where could they be?

28,000 Romanian and Bulgarian immigrants arrived.

This was more than twice the rate of the previous 12 months, so again, a significant increase.

UKIP did not promise 29 million immigrants.... as you well know and have been corrected on so many times. They stated we are opening the borders to x number of people.

The name of the MP who defected to UKIP is Douglas Carson.

    And it's created a poopstorm!

It's also been in the works since long before these immigration numbers came out.

UKIP claims a Conservative MP’s days are numbered in Clacton after naming its own General Election hopeful.

Roger Lord, 57, will stand against Douglas Carswell in the battle for the Clacton seat next year and UKIP bosses are confident the Great Bentley farmer will oust his Tory opponent.

Ukip’s Clacton party secretary Anne Poonian said they had asked Eurosceptic Mr Carswell to defect from the Tories and join them.

I dont get why this MP's defection is the top news story on BBC. Does anyone really care? I've never heard of the guy.

It's because it forces a by-election, with the tory defector running as a UKIP MP.

He had close to a 30% majority, so it's fueling fear in the tory party that one of their MPs will make their way to be the first UKIP MP in parliament. If he can turn around tory support into UKIP support at the drop of a hat it will be a big problem for the tories (and other political parties).

Secondly, what he has stated about internal talks in the tory party and the promised referendum is pretty damaging.

I've heard him and seen him on the news talking about stuff, but wouldn't be able to name him if I saw him.

Edit, both Paddypower and Ladbrokes are offering the shortest odds on Carswell winning the by-election as a UKIP MP.

BBC state it would be a seismic change in UK politics should Carswell be able to turn around the tory support to UKIP support.
