New Tax Disc Rules
Can anyone here give a definative answer as to what drivers are supposed to be doing on 1st October 2014 when the tax disc has been abolished? I cannot even find a straight answer on the DVLA website.
Someone suggested I had to register somewhere online in order to pay my road tax in future, but other people have told me to just continue going to the post office as before. I'm confused.
My partners tax expires on 31st October 2014. Previously I would have gone to the local post office, paperwork in hand, and purchased a new disc. I understand now actual disc will be given but can I still go to the post office and pay for the "disc" as I did before?
If I choose to pay via direct debit, how do I set that up?
I'm quite happy to pay by monthly direct debit but what happens when they increase the price? Will they provide me with notification of a change to my payments or just take whatever they want?
My parents have no internet access so how do they register if thats something people have to do?
Thanks

When the tax expires I would guess that the renewal letter would let you know the various options for paying.0

Why don't you do it all online? All the options will be given and you choose what suits you. THe only significant change will be no actual disc will be sent to you for display.0

They won't have to buy online. VED will be available as it is now.My parents have no internet access so how do they register if thats something people have to do?
You will be told in advance of any increase.

Apply on the DVLA website:
You'll need either:- the 16 digit reference number from your tax disc renewal letter (V11)
- the 11 digit reference number from your log book (V5C)
- Telephone: 0300 123 4321
- Textphone: 0300 790 6201
- 2p to 10p from landlines
- 10p to 40p from mobile phones
Go to your local Post Office. You'll need to take:- completed V11 reminder (or your V5C)
- MOT test certificate if required (must be valid when the tax disc starts)
- the payment shown on the reminder

The monthly DD option is paying for 12mo in monthly slices, just the same as buying a year's insurance or a TV licence or your council tax monthly. So no rise will affect your payments until the 12mo tax is up for renewal.
You'll be paying 5% extra for the DD option, same as buying 6mo at a time (currently 10% for that option).0 -

I'm going to try and keep paying mine all in one go like I currently do, but I'm glad they're finally offering monthly payment options. It might not seem like a lot to some, but our car tax is £120ish for 6 months and there was a point (due to redundancy etc) where a lump sum like that was a real stretch.0 -
They've always offered ways to spread the cost, but in advance rather than in arrears. Car Tax Savings Stamps up until 2007, generic PO Savings Stamps since then.SparksAlive wrote: »but I'm glad they're finally offering monthly payment options.0 -
Thanks for your replies, thats put my mind to rest. I was thinking I had to register somewhere before 1st Ocotober or I would have a big fine.
Will just wait until the usual paperwork arrives.
Good news that it does not have to be done online, that will make my parents happy.
I agree with offering a DD option, even if it is at a premium. Financially, it will make things easier for us but it will also save me having to wait in a long queue at the post office or remember to buy online.0 -

I never knew they did that, always thought it would have been a good idea when waiting behind someone wanting to buy stamps for water, electric etc. (yes that was quite a few years ago!!).0 -

Thats the boat that we are in, and we have two cars. So often due to redundancy, short hours etc. I've had to dip into the road tax fund to pay for food etc, only to be stuffed when the £120+ bill arrives!!0
