Christmas advents

I should probably start this thread by apologising to some people for mentioning the dreaded "a" word as i've seen from other threads in CCC that people seem to have a love or hate relationship with them.
As a relatively new comper (started in April of this year), I haven't had the chance to experience the christmas period on MSE! I was wondering what exactly are advents? And why are they loved by some but hated by others?
I'm extremely curious as to how they work and I must admit that i'm quite looking forward to them at the moment, even if just to find out what they are and to take part in them myself!

I was in your position before Christmas last but tbh I couldn't get to grips with them at all! Too many to keep on top of and what with those and everything else I had to choose - and I chose not to do them! Don't know if I'll try again this year - I think they'd have to be very well worth it to change my mind!0

I was hoping that they'd be another way to win some extra little presents to give friends/family at Christmas! I can see myself starting them but exactly as you said CheCazzo, not getting to grips with them and giving up which is exactly what I did with click to wins! I guess i'll just have to wait and see when they come around, my curiosity is still getting the better of me a little bit and i'm looking forward to seeing what they're like

That will give you some idea re amounts & style

I absolutely love the advents because during this time people struggle and try entering them all. I pick the best ones and email myself links to about a 100 of the best. I will then look at not so well known blogs, skill based and postal and text comps that would be very low in entries. Its the month where I have the most success usually winning a few grands in prizes. It can be hard because there is more than usual but be well prepared.
Thanks for explaining, must admit I wasn't sure what the Advents were either x0 -

Wow! Thats an amazing achievement afteritv - I was hoping to just gather a few bits and bobs from them, I had no idea that they would be such high value items or that you had the chance of winning so much that it would amount to such a high value.0 -

Thanks for the link weeowens
I can definitely see how it gets so hectic trying to keep up with all of them!! I think i'll have to come up with some kind of selective system like afteritv otherwise I think i'd be here all night every night trying to keep up with them! 0 -
Some love them, while others hate them, for pretty much the same reasons: there are LOTS more comps ( therefore lots more chances to win)
Most of the comps are run as dailies so you have to be really organised and work out which ones you want to enter.
I find I have to let the main board slide for most of December as I just can't cope with the sheer volume of advents, mags and normal comps.0 -
I'd just pick as many as you can handle then save them to a list on your PC.stefalfie11 wrote: »Thanks for the link weeowens

Last year I emailed live links to myself & then worked off the email each day.0 -

Apology accepted, although you know she'll be along sooner or later with the flashing tree don't you?
I don't have a problem with the advents so much as the way the boards get over run with posters who are apparently clueless. We get threads where there are 1,000,000 of instant wins where everybody who wins post to say they have won; answers getting posted over and over again; the wrong answers getting posting after the right answer is already there...
On the upside there will be haggis!Rational judgement, now, at this very moment.
Virtuous action, now, at this very moment.

Willing acceptance - now, at this very moment - of what you can’t change0 -
I'd expect nothing less than a flashing Christmas tree Moneybot
It was BlueBella's countdown that made me curious enough about them to post this thread to find out more! I've never had haggis though either so possibly they may be my chance to try some.
That sounds like a very good approach weeowens, I've already got folders with links to bookmarked dailies/rafflecopters/mags that I use for my day to day comping so it sounds like one will soon be created for advents too and should help with the organisation that cagsd mentioned! It feels like I should be preparing some kind of military operation to get through them, have to admit that i'm still excited about them though!0
