Flying in and out of different cities in USA

I am just starting to plan a holiday to the USA for myself and my OH next summer. I would like to fly into Washington, spend 3/4 days there, then take the train to NY for 3 days then to Boston for 3 days then over to Cape Cod for maybe 4/5 days to chill out. Ideally I would like to fly home from Boston but it seems to be so expensive to fly into one city and out from another. At the moment it seems the cheapest way to do it would be to fly in and out of New York and take the train up to Washington, down to Boston then back up to New York! Obviously this would be a bit more hassle but we will do this if it saves a considerable amount of money. I just wondered whether anybody might have any insight into getting reasonable flights into Washington and out from Boston? It will be the beginning of July, thanks for any help

  • We regularly fly into one airport and out of another and I've never seen any difference in the price from returning from the same airport.
we use KLM by the way

It is no more expensive perhaps you are pricing it as two one ways rather than one open jaw ticket?
Look in https://www.kayak.co.uk and in flights click on multi sector and put in the two legs and you'll get a decent price.

This is a perfectly standard thing and is known as an "open jaw" ticket. Often it's no more expensive than a normal return and can actually work out cheaper.

DC and Boston make the perfect start and end points. You can then do Philly, NYC and elsewhere in New England in between. It doesn't really matter which way around you do it, I'd just play around with dates and schedules.
  • Yes, I was, in fact, searching for 2 one way tickets. I've never heard of an 'open jaw' ticket - obviously not as well travelled as many of you on here! Thanks for all your helpful comments

I will resume my planning armed with this new information

If it's right at the beginning of July then you will be hitting the Independence Day holidays where airfares may be higher than usual and public transport will be busy. It may be worth waiting until all that has died down.

Seconded for KLM. We recently flew in to Dulles (DC) and out of JFK (NY) at £500 per head return with KLM; fare was almost identical to return from either airport.
However, your dates may well be crucial because you could be impinging on school holiday peak fare times. We went latish June after Son's GCSEs and by moving flights up a couple of days were able to save apx £200 per head. Midweek is also usually cheaper. If you have any flexibility worth your dates it may be with playing around with them to see if you can come up with better options.

Don't forget to include Baltimore BWI in your search which can be OK ish for Washington.
Posts are not advice and must not be relied upon.
  • Unfortunately I work in a school which means I can only go during school holidays. It's a private school so we finish 2 weeks before state schools but it's still the beginning of July and the flights seem to double once you hit July - really annoying! I am getting results around £570 in June but it goes up to £970 in July.

Are there any disadvantages to booking early? If I left it a few months would prices be likely to come down at all (or go up!)? We are definitely going to go so if necessary I will just suck it up and book.

Also, we are planning to Amtrax between Washington-Philadelphia-New York-Boston. Does anyone have any experience of this? Anything I should know? I assume it is better to book the tickets in advance?

Thanks again for all your help.

Have a look at the same route from Dublin. (either DUB to DUB or out from Dublin and flying back into the UK)
LCC fares to Dublin are cheap and the difference in taxes between the UK and Ireland are significant.

    Definitely book Amtrak in advance
