Royal Mail Special Delivery by 1pm - late

Hi all, I hope this isn't in the wrong place but couldn't think where to put it :o

A few weeks ago I was away from home and realised I had left my railcard for my train journey at home, so my mum posted it to me by Royal Mail Special Delivery by 1pm (This was on a Saturday). My train was at 2.30pm. Waited all morning and the railcard didn't arrive, finally showed up at 1.50pm after much panicking.

My question is, how late does delivery have to be to get a refund, is there a time frame?
TIA

However to muddy the waters. If you/they didn't pay for Saturday Guarantee, then it technically wasn't due until Monday.
If it was scanned on a PDA then it will already show as a failure though.

Sounds like it was posted Saturday for delivery Monday to me, although it could be read both ways.

    OP please can you clarify.

A day late and you get £5, 7+ days you get £10.

50 mins won't get you compensation.

"This compensation for substantial delay is separate from any refund due for service failure, e.g. fee refund for failure to meet the Royal Mail Special Delivery Guaranteed by 1pm™ guarantee"

Further down on the link just posted, compensation is different to a refund of the price paid for the service. Which I believe you should be able to get back but as has been said depends if the paid for Saturday special delivery.

I once claimed for a SD that was twenty minutes late and they refunded the fees paid (I think it was £24.50). I had to claim within two weeks of posting I believe. No compensation for delay as it wasn't more than 24 hours late.

If not delivered by 1pm, you can reclaim the postage paid
  • Hi all thanks for your replies. I understand my mum paid about £10.50 postage and she did pay for the Saturday guarantee. So she will be entitled to the refund but not compensation? I understand I have to claim this back with a form, is this the 'Lost, damaged or delayed form'? Thank you all again

If the date of posting was more than 14 days ago them Royal Mail WILL reject a claim (I think that your original post stated "a few weeks ago"?)

The claim form you need is a P58 (the "Lost, Damaged or Delayed" one you quote) - you can download it:

Although this is true for usual claims where RM want to allow time for something to be delivered, does this apply to a late SD item? Immediately the 1pm deadline has passed the refund is due.
