In a way that's true, but it's possibly the other way round to the way that I see it. Facebook are putting a lot of research into what pees people off when it appears in their newsfeed, and are trying to minimise how much people see of those things.
For example, we all know "friends" that spend hours sharing inane pictures or cartoons with "funny" or "motivational" messages on them, usually because they don't have enough of a brain to come up with anything original themselves. Or people that keeping sending game invitations every day, even though it should be quite clear to them by now that we're not interested.
I don't see most of that guff anyway because I use FBPurity to filter out most of the junk, but it drives a lot of people mad. FB want people to have a pleasant experience, so they keep coming back, they feel happy and so they are more likely to click on the ads, which makes Facebook more money.
If you don't click Like on a friend or company's posts very often, you will find that you end up seeing fewer of their posts in your newsfeed. That's the theory, anyway. :rotfl:Thanks to all who post constructively.

They've not long changed the rules to companies couldn't use a share as an entry but could ask to help publicise.
Wish FB would make up it's blooming mind
I also wish they would use apps. Much easier and fairer IMO.Thanks to all posters :A0 -
One of the main reasons for people shutting down their FB accounts is because FB keep changing things every five minutes :rotfl:Thanks to all who post constructively.

It is true though if you do not interact with companies either by liking or commenting, they do not appear in your newsfeed.
I have mentioned before, when I am at work I use a page called "netvibes" as my homepage (used to use igoogle until they did away with it). Anyway, on part of that home page I have linked my FB account and it is like a mini facebook which shows your wall newsfeed. It is unbelievable how many posts show on my netvibes FB newsfeed that do not show on my wall when I access FB normally on my laptop or Ipad. I have sat and compared the two at home and I would say only about 50% of what I see on Netvibes is actually shown on my wall when accessing the full FB normally? The best things in life are free.....0 -
They changed the rules a couple of years ago so that you are not allowed to do a "Like and Share" competition or a "like and comment" competition, most people seemed to ignore this rule though, or were not aware of it as they still continued to get posted.
It was supposed to be that all competitions had to be run through a Facebook App ... but a lot of the smaller businesses don't know how to make Facebook apps or don't have the resources to pay a developer to do it for them.
In light of this, they've recently changed it all again making it easier for page owners to create apps ... it is still against the rules however to use any kind of timeline post (ie share on your timeline / share on a friends timeline). This is also still getting done, I entered a comp yesterday (to win a mans watch) where you had to share and tag a friend ... both of which are against the rules.
Here's a breakdown :
What You Can Do:
- Require people to like a post and/or comment on a post to be entered
- Require that someone post something directly on your timeline to enter (could be a text post or a photo)
-Use likes as a voting method (either liking a post or photo on your timeline)
-Require that someone message your page to enter
-Announce the winner of the contest on your page
-Require that to win the prize, entrants come back to your page to see who has won the contest
-Use a Like button plugin on a website as a voting mechanism
-Use an app plugin to post an entry to your contest directly on your page
-Run your contest through a Facebook app
What You Can’t Do:
-Require that people share a post or photo to be entered
-Require someone to post something on their own personal timeline or a friend’s timeline to enter
-Require people to tag themselves in a photo to either vote or enter
-Have anyone who likes your page be entered to win (contest does not take place on the timeline)
Im a developer so have done a bit of work on FB apps.0 -
The IPM have just announced this.
http://www.theipm.org.uk/information/Facebook-to-ban-Like-Gates.aspx“we want people to like pages because they want to connect and hear from the businesses, not because of artificial incentives. We believe this update will benefit people and advertisers alike”0 -
So theoretically that should be the end of the 'like and share' nonsense? I'd be very happy if that were the case but then where's the incentive for companies to set up FB comps in the first place? I'd also wonder what the failure to like/share would do to your chances of winning!0

From November it should no longer necessary to 'Like' Facebook pages in order to enter a competition.
I set up a thread on this a few days ago -proud gran to 4 lovely boys and one little girl0 -

They are just quoting from a FB blog from a while ago, it's not a recommendation to their members.
If a new app is used it will not be possible to tell if someone has liked a page, older apps have a short grace period before they will have to do the same.
It does not stop a company running timeline competitions or app ones and then only selecting winners who have liked the page it just cannot be a condition of entry (just as share is not supposed to be now)0
